About the Role
Trains other Package Handlers (PHs) on loading, unloading, palletizing, and scanning techniques to ensure efficient and safe movement of packages through the operation. Responsible for the physical loading, unloading, and/or sorting of packages by hand, including lifting, pushing, pulling, carrying, and placing packages in a safe and efficient manner. May be assigned to or rotate through various areas and positions such as Loader, Unloader, Palletizer, Scan Weigh and Key (SWAK), Quality Assurance (QA), Facer, or Switcher.
Responsibilities
- Trains new PHs in effective unloading, loading, palletizing, carrying, smalls handling, SWAK, and non-conveyable package handling techniques.
- Provides additional training to PHs as determined by management on unloading, carrying, loading, palletizing, smalls handling, SWAK, or non-conveyable package handling techniques.
- Provides feedback on proper package handling techniques, as needed.
- Reinforces dock safety standards among peer PHs.
- Understands and demonstrates all necessary processes and procedures by example.
- Updates managers on conditions during the sort to aid operational efficiency decisions.
- Assists in the implementation of new package handling procedures and techniques.
- Regularly loads/unloads, palletizes, lifts, carries, pushes, and pulls packages while training other PHs.
- Utilizes hand-to-surface methods for all package handling.
- Loads and unloads packages onto or from delivery vehicles, trailers, pallets, conveyor system carts, and load gratings.
- Lifts, carries, pushes, and pulls packages on a continuous and repetitive basis for approximately 3-5 hours per shift, with potential for one or more shifts each day.
- Determines the appropriate conveyor system by scanning packages, reading labels and charts, verifying numbers, memorizing information, and sorts packages accordingly.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- No minimum education required.
- No prior experience required; six (6) months of experience as a PH with FedEx Ground preferred.
- Ability to train multiple peer PHs simultaneously.
- Ability to understand and follow instructions regarding work duties and safety methods.
- Ability to discern numbers and information to sort packages correctly.
- Ability to use basic tools and equipment such as skate wheel rollers, dock carts, hand-held scanners, chutes, and unloading devices.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work well in a fast-paced team environment.
- PHs operating switching equipment must have a valid driver’s license and maintain a Department of Transportation (DOT) file.
Job Conditions
- Work in hot and cold temperatures.
- Work in an environment with loud noise.
- Ability to lift and carry between 10 and 50 pounds.
- Travel should not be required.
