About the Role

Delta Air Lines' Operations Decision Science team is seeking a graduate operations research intern to develop data-driven solutions that provide decision support while improving airline efficiency and performance. The ideal candidate has foundational technical knowledge of operations research optimization models, simulation models, and core data science/data engineering concepts, along with excellent organizational and communication skills. This role supports the delivery of decision support applications by leveraging combinatorics, algorithms, and optimization in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

  • Build complex data sets from multiple internal and external data sources.
  • Leverage emerging technologies to identify efficient and meaningful ways to disseminate and synthesize data for business needs.
  • Design, develop, implement, and calibrate optimization products.
  • Interface with business unit leaders to develop and maintain internal customer relationships.
  • Practice a safety-conscious environment to ensure employee safety and well-being.

Requirements

  • BA/BS in Industrial Engineering, Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Minimum of one year of doctorate-level coursework completed (PhD track).
  • Proven success in solving complex quantitative problems.
  • Working knowledge of one or more optimization techniques (LP, MILP, QCP, MIQP, CP, and/or heuristics).
  • Proficiency in Python, C++, or other programming languages (Python preferred).
  • Strong written, oral communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Commitment to prioritizing safety and security of self, others, and personal data.
  • Ability to embrace diverse people, thinking, and styles.
  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
  • At least 18 years of age with authorization to work in the United States.

This internship runs from January 2027 to May 2027. Candidates cannot be enrolled in any courses (online or in-person) while participating in the internship. Note that this position does not guarantee a full-time opportunity upon graduation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of commercial optimization solvers (Gurobi, CPLEX, GLPK, etc.).
  • Experience with model tuning and calibration.
  • Proficiency in working with relational databases and SQL query authoring.
  • Familiarity with fundamental machine learning techniques, including reinforcement learning.
  • Working knowledge of AWS.
