Personal Care Aide (PCA)

Responsibilities

• Distribute meals to residents in the dining room during mealtime.
• Clean the dining room after meals when required.
• Distribute facility provided snacks to residents during evening snack time.
• Assist residents with showering/bathing as needed.
• Assist residents with maintaining a healthy hygiene routine as needed.
• Launder residents clothing, linens, and towels as needed.
• Assist residents that require limited mobility assistance as needed.
• Answer all call bells and check residents' whereabouts during rounds.
• Assist residents with operating the elevator lift.
• Perform housekeeping and light maintenance tasks as needed, including but not limited to: laundering residents clothing, linens, and towels, cleaning resident rooms, making residents’ beds, unclogging toilets, adjusting room temperature, and salt areas outside of facility.
• Report all pertinent information to the PCA in charge.

Medication Assistance

• Count and control controlled substances with outgoing PCA (sign your initials if count is correct).
• Report any missing controlled substances to Administration.
• Prepare medication and bring it to the dining room during mealtime, and assist residents with medication.
• If a resident requires medication prior to breakfast, the charge PCA shall go to the resident's room and assist the resident with medication.
• If a resident requires afternoon or after dinner medication, the PCA shall assist the resident with medication from the med room.
• The procedure of assisting with injectable medication involves: handing over the injectable medication to the resident, ensuring the resident self-administers the medication in the presence of the PCA, and safely disposing of the remains of the injectable medication into the sharps container. The PCA shall never come into contact or dispose of injectable medication after it has been handed to the resident.
• Document all pertinent information regarding residents in the 24-hour logbook.
