About the role
The employee provides instruction to students in the assigned school, assuming responsibility for all aspects of classroom instruction, assessments, and behavior management on a short-term or long-term basis. Implements teacher-created lesson plans or collaborates with educators to generate lesson plans, using differentiated strategies to instruct students at all levels across content areas. Daily assignments vary based on school needs.
Responsibilities
- Improvises lessons in emergency situations where detailed lesson plans are unavailable
- Plans, prepares, and delivers appropriate curriculum content
- Establishes and communicates clear objectives for learning activities
- Uses district curriculum to plan daily instructional activities
- Remains current in best practices for instructional delivery, assessment, and behavior management
- Assesses student learning using multiple tools and adjusts instruction to meet group/individual needs
- Creates a positive educational climate for students
- Maintains classroom order in accordance with division guidelines
- Supervises students during non-classroom time (before/after school, activities, fire drills)
- Collaborates with faculty in planning and delivering instruction
- Communicates regularly with parents, administration, and staff
- Incorporates and models appropriate use of technology to support instruction
- Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local education regulations
- Regular attendance is required
- Performs other related duties as required
Requirements
- Minimum of 60 semester hours of college credit or 2 years of experience working with children
- Completion of Child Abuse and Neglect Recognition and Intervention training (Virginia DSS)
- Ability to lift/move up to 10 pounds frequently and 25–50 pounds occasionally
- Ability to assist, move, or restrain students for safety interventions
- Frequent sitting, talking, lifting, walking, standing, and hearing
Pay
$23.36 per hour (2026-27 school year).
