Permanent Machine Operator- EN

About the role

As a Permanent Machine Operator at CN, you’ll operate and service all work equipment machines for which you are qualified, on the assigned territory. You’ll perform a variety of duties to ensure our infrastructure remains safe, sound, and train-ready, including tasks typically handled by Track Employees such as inspecting, repairing, and replacing rails, ties, switches, and ballast. This role is ideal if you enjoy working outdoors in a safety-focused team environment and want a meaningful career in rail maintenance.

Responsibilities

• Operate on- and off-track heavy equipment to support track repair and maintenance activities
• Remove and replace defective ties, rails, spikes, and anchors
• Correct deviations in track surface, alignment, and gauge
• Install and repair street and railroad crossings
• Distribute track material
• Clear brush, vegetation, snow, and litter from railroad right-of-way
• Establish and maintain drainage
• Inspect and maintain heavy equipment
• Perform other duties as assigned, including track inspection and maintenance when machine operation is not required
• Comply with track safety standards, operating rules, and safe work procedures

Requirements

• High School diploma or equivalent (GED)
• Valid Driver’s License
• Ability to collaborate with others and share information
• Demonstrates active listening
• Good eye-hand coordination and grasping ability
• Must be able to perform repetitive physical activities during the course of a shift
• Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds (22 kg) regularly and up to 70 pounds (32 kg) occasionally
• Must be able to supply basic personal tools for equipment maintenance
• Must be available to work shift work and occasional overtime
• Ability to work outdoors in various types of weather and environmental conditions

Assets

• Relevant work experience in similar working conditions
• Postsecondary trade education
• Experience in or training in mechanical work
• Knowledge of signals or Rail Operating Rules

Working Conditions

• Headquartered out of specified locations and starts work at this location
• May be required to report to another location occasionally or work away from home
• When required to work away from headquarters, travel and expenses are compensated according to the collective agreement

Training

Successful candidates will participate in a paid four-week training program at a CN Campus (Winnipeg, MB), followed by additional on-the-job training. The program focuses on health and safety rules, regulatory requirements, and CN’s safety standards. Successful completion of both classroom and on-the-job training is required to continue employment.
