Perioperative Care Tech (POCT) CDH OR Part-time Rotating

About the Role

The Perioperative Care Tech reflects the mission, vision, and values of Northwestern Medicine, adhering to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complying with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines, and regulatory and accreditation standards. A clinically competent Perioperative Care Technician who works under the supervision of the RN in delivering skilled and effective direct and indirect perioperative care and all related functions. Utilizes initiative, strives to maintain a steady level of productivity, assists in maintenance of a safe and clean environment, and participates in the department’s continuous quality improvement activities.

Responsibilities

• Provides accurate information and timely updates to patients and customers, addressing questions and concerns promptly or identifying appropriate resources.
• Assists patients and customers with directions and wayfinding.
• Uses effective service recovery skills to solve problems or service breakdowns.
• Uses organizational and unit/department resources efficiently, managing work schedules to complete tasks on time.
• Contributes to continuous improvement processes, including cost reduction, workflow streamlining, and service enhancement.
• Collaborates with the RN to address patient safety and legal issues, clarifying special procedures or observations as needed.
• Communicates patients' progress and diagnostic results to the RN.
• Reports patient data concisely and thoroughly, documenting care activities accurately.
• Performs clinical skills per protocol, such as vital sign measurement, aseptic technique, non-invasive specimen collection, hot and cold applications, simple respiratory therapy, post-mortem care, application of TEDs/pneumatic TEDs, clipping, IV preparation, unit restocking, patient ambulation and toileting, and maintaining unit cleanliness.
• Gathers data for patient care planning, including intake, output, and vital signs.
• Assists with patient admission, orientation, discharge, and transportation.
• Observes patients for significant changes and assists in direct patient care under RN supervision.
• Maintains education records and participates in annual competencies.
• Partners with management to develop skills for up-to-date patient care.
• Provides a warm welcome to patients, visitors, and staff, demonstrating genuine caring concern.
• Assists with house-wide and department-wide Quality Improvement activities.

Requirements

• High school graduate or equivalent.
• Proficiency in medical terminology, English, and verbal/written communication skills.
• CPR – Basic Life Support certification (required).
• Proficient in phlebotomy, blood draws, EKG, or glucoscans (preferred).
• Nursing Assistant Certification (preferred).
