About the Role

The Sr. Perfusionist performs extracorporeal support for adult patients with congenital or acquired cardiovascular disorders, providing monitoring, interpretation, and intervention. This role is part of the CVOR team, working collaboratively to facilitate patient/procedure flow and acting as a patient advocate in all ethical and legal aspects.

Responsibilities

  • Performs functions necessary for the support, treatment, measurement, or supplementation of the cardiovascular and circulatory systems, including heart-lung machine operation, counterpulsation, ventricular assistance, and extracorporeal life support.
  • Administers pharmacological and therapeutic agents, blood products, or anesthetic agents as ordered by a physician or surgeon.
  • Performs blood chemistry analysis and physiologic monitoring, including blood gas, anticoagulation, hemostasis, and thermal regulation.
  • Evaluates signs and symptoms, implementing changes based on observed abnormalities according to protocol.
  • Ensures and prepares equipment and specialty items for each procedure.
  • Induces hypothermia/hyperthermia, conducts hemodilution, concentration, or filtration, and administers medications or blood products under direct order or as prescribed by a licensed physician.
  • Decontaminates and cleans perfusion-related equipment according to guidelines.
  • Documents care in medical records and databases, completes perfusion pre-procedure checklists, and collaborates in departmental goal planning and training needs.
  • Expands the scientific base by reviewing literature and disseminating recent innovations and research findings relevant to the specialty and patient outcomes.
  • Responds to on-call requirements within 30 minutes.
  • Serves as a resource during complex case set-up and performance, mentoring all members of the perfusion team.

Qualifications

  • Completion and graduation from a CAAHEP-accredited school of cardiovascular perfusion.
  • Five to 10 years of experience performing at least 40 perfusion cases per year preferred.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in an appropriate discipline preferred.

Certifications

  • ABCP: Cardiovascular Perfusionists - Certification, or certification eligible, by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (Certification must be achieved within 24 months of start date.)
  • BLS: AHA Basic Life Support
