Performance Dietician
About the role
The Performance Dietitian provides specialized nutrition care and performance-focused dietary guidance to optimize the health, recovery, and operational readiness of personnel. This role includes individual counseling, group education, laboratory-informed assessment, and operational nutrition support across training and rehabilitation environments.
Responsibilities
- Function as direct access providers, evaluating and counseling personnel without a referral.
- Provide individual and group nutritional planning, screening, assessment, intervention, counseling, and documentation that is guided by evidence-based peer-reviewed literature.
- Collaborate with, advise, collaborate, and consult with the chain of command on issues pertinent to all aspects of nutrition.
- Conduct individualized nutrition assessments, which may include ordering labs and hydration assessment.
- Provide small and large group education on performance nutrition.
- Develop protocols to optimize performance and readiness.
- Develop protocols for rehabilitation and return to duty.
- Serve as an advisor and consultant on dining facility and/or galley nutrition and coordinate between food service and command.
- Serve as a primary advisor on sports foods, dietary supplements, medical foods, and performance enhancing substances within the POTFF program and unit/Command.
Requirements
- Bachelor of Science in Nutrition Science (Master of Science, preferred) or related field and hold certification from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) as a Registered Dietitian (RD).
- Master’s degree may be replaced with five (5) plus years of paid, full-time experience as a Sport and/or Performance Dietitian with individual athletes and groups of athletes at the levels of NCAA Collegiate Division I, Olympic, professional sports, USAF CRAFT, USAF SWTW, and/or SOF Operators in the accompanying, respective settings.
- Minimum of three (3) years or more of demonstrable accumulated experience as a Sport and/or Performance Dietitian with individual athletes and groups of athletes at the levels of NCAA Collegiate Division I, Olympic, professional sports, USAF CRAFT, USAF SWTW and/or SOF Operators in the accompanying, respective settings.
- Possess a specialty certification as a Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics (CSSD).
- If deferred, the contractor shall earn the CSSD within six (6) months of employment.
- Possess certifications and/or diplomas relevant to a Performance Dietitian's practice are desired, but not required: International Society for the Advancement of Kinanthropometry (ISAK) Level 1 & 2, International Olympic Committee Diploma in Sport Nutrition, Integrative and Functional Nutrition Certified ProfessionalTM (IFNCP), Associate of Science or Bachelor of Science degree in Culinary Arts/Science/Nutrition, or Professional Culinary Experience (i.e., Chef, Sous Chef, Line Cook, etc.).
