About the Role
Works under the direction of the physician and the Arizona State Nurse Practice Act to provide nursing care to patients in compliance with nursing standards and regulations. Utilizes the nursing process to make continuing assessments of the patient’s total health needs; implements nursing interventions based on assessment data; develops and implements the nursing plan of care and evaluates the patient’s response. Strives to provide excellent patient care with compassion, tact, cheerfulness, accuracy, patience, flexibility in scheduling, calmness in emergencies, and the ability to work well with team members, receiving and applying feedback from peers and superiors. Assists with orientation of new staff to the unit as requested. All care is provided with kindness and compassion.
Responsibilities
- Provides evidence-based care to prevent the development of Healthcare Acquired Conditions and hospital readmissions.
- Practices standard precautions during patient contact and while handling contaminated materials.
- Assessment:
- Collects patient health data according to hospital and unit-specific policies, procedures, and standards of nursing care.
- Gathers pertinent data from the patient, significant others, and health care providers.
- Completes a comprehensive patient history and physical in a timely manner, including biophysical, psychosocial, environmental, self-care abilities, educational, age-specific, cultural, and discharge planning needs.
- Diagnosis / Care Needs:
- Analyzes assessment data to identify care needs.
- Formulates a plan to provide appropriate care based on identified patient needs, involving the patient and significant others as appropriate.
- Implementation:
- Provides nursing care based on identified nursing diagnoses and patient care standards, consistent with therapies from other disciplines.
- Evaluation:
- Evaluates the patient’s progress toward attainment of desired outcomes, evident in ongoing assessment data.
- Revises nursing diagnoses and care needs based on reassessment data.
- Clinical Lead:
- Coordinates nursing personnel and patient care.
- Ensures quality and patient satisfaction through coordination of the nursing process and compliance.
Requirements
- Education: Associate Degree in Nursing or graduate of a Nursing Diploma program.
- Certification/Licensure:
- Current, valid Arizona RN license or compact state RN license.
- Current BLS certification from American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
- Unit Specific Requirements:
- Medical Surgical Units: Basic EKG competency within 3 months of hire.
- Pediatrics: PALS certification from American Heart Association or American Red Cross required within 6 months of hire.
- Intensive Care Unit/Progressive Care Unit:
- ACLS certification from American Heart Association or American Red Cross required upon hire.
- Basic EKG competency within 30 days of hire.
- Women’s Services:
- NRP certification required within 6 months of hire/transfer.
- ACLS through American Heart Association or American Red Cross required within 3 months of hire/transfer.
- S.T.A.B.L.E. required within 6 months of hire/transfer.
- AWHONN Fetal Monitor Course:
- Basic course to be completed within 6 months of hire/transfer.
- Intermediate course to be completed within 12 months of hire/transfer.
- Emergency Department:
- ACLS and PALS certification from American Heart Association or American Red Cross required within 3 months of hire.
- Emergency Severity Index (ESI) training required within 6 months of hire.
- TNCC required within 24 months of hire.
- Hemodialysis:
- ACLS certification from American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
- Basic ECG within 3 months of hire.
- Clinical Decision Unit: Basic EKG competency within 3 months of hire.
- ECHO:
- ACLS certification from American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
- Basic ECG competency within 30 days of hire.
- Surgical Services/Circulator:
- ACLS and PALS certification from American Heart Association or American Red Cross within 90 days of hire.
- Basic EKG competency within 30 days of hire.
- Minimum five (5) years of experience for incumbents hired into a full-time shift working a weekend, evening, or night shift.
- Minimum one (1) year of experience in one or more of the following: Endo, Ortho, General, Urology, Robotics, Pulmonary, or GYN, if hired into a seasonal position. Incumbents hired into a full-time shift for weekends or evenings will not have to take call.
- Surgical Services/PACU/Outpatient:
- ACLS and PALS certification from American Heart Association or American Red Cross within 90 days of hire.
- Minimum one year of experience in an acute care or med-surg setting.
- Basic EKG competency within 30 days of hire.
- Minimum five (5) years of experience for incumbents hired into a full-time shift working a weekend, evening, or night shift. Incumbents hired into a full-time shift and scheduled a weekend or evening shift will not have to take call.
- Cath Lab:
- ACLS from American Heart Association or American Red Cross required upon hire.
- ECG competency upon hire.
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience as a Registered Nurse.
- Cardiology: Basic EKG competency within 30 days of hire.
- Clinical Lead: Maintains BLS/ACLS/PALS through American Heart Association or American Red Cross, TNCC, De-escalation techniques, NRP, Basic EKG, and ESI, as required, per RN position description for assigned area(s).
Preferences
- Education: Bachelor’s in nursing.
- Experience: Experience working in the respective clinical area is desired.
- Unit Specific Preferences:
- Medical Surgical Units:
- Certified Medical-Surgical Nurse encouraged.
- ACLS certification from American Heart Association or American Red Cross preferred.
- Pediatrics:
- One-year acute pediatric experience.
- Certified Pediatric Nurse encouraged.
- Intensive Care Unit/Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit:
- Certified Critical Care Nurse encouraged.
- Cardiac Medicine Certified and/or Cardiac Surgery Certification encouraged for CVICU.
- One-year PCU experience preferred.
- Progressive Care Unit:
- Two years acute care experience.
- Progressive Care Certified Nurse encouraged.
- Women’s Services:
- Two years of recent labor, delivery, post-partum, and newborn experience.
- Inpatient Obstetrical Nursing Certification encouraged.
- Lactation Nursing Certification encouraged.
- Emergency Department:
- One-year Acute Med/Surg nursing.
- CCRN or CEN encouraged.
- Acute Rehab:
- One year Rehabilitation experience.
- Certified Rehabilitation Registered Nurse encouraged.
- FIMS certification.
- Hemodialysis:
- One year of Hemodialysis experience preferred or one year of Critical Care experience.
- Certified Dialysis Nurse encouraged.
- Clinical Decision Unit: ACLS certification from American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
- ECHO: Two years acute care experience.
- Surgical Services/Circulator: CNOR encouraged.
- Surgical Services/PACU/Outpatient: CPAN and CAPA encouraged.
- Cath Lab: One-year CCU, ICU, or ED experience preferred.
- Medical Surgical Units:
Work Requirements
- Able to handle multiple priorities simultaneously.
- Demonstrates good oral and written communication skills.
- Able to manage technical business equipment (e.g., phone, fax, computer).
- Able to assist with the movement of an adult patient weighing up to 300 lbs.
- Able to care for patients with infectious diseases.
- Able to sit for 3-5 hours per day; stand for 3-5 hours per day; walk for 3-5 hours per day.
