About the role
Provides professional leadership and technical skills and knowledge to ensure accurate and timely performance of laboratory services and reporting of results to responsible party. Reports to the Director of Laboratory Services. Performs as Technical Lead CLS of laboratory in Director's absence.
Responsibilities
- Performs as Technical Lead CLS of laboratory in Director's absence.
- Responsible for implementing and maintaining a Quality Assurance program, establishing and maintaining an approved procedure manual, providing coordination of the technical and administrative functions for the operations of the Clinical Laboratory, verification of the test procedures performed and establishment of the laboratory's test performance characteristics, including the precision and accuracy of each test and test system.
- Establishing and maintaining an approved Proficiency Testing (PT) program, verifying test systems have established acceptable performance specifications for the performance characteristics of accuracy, precision, analytical sensitivity, and analytical specificity.
- Establishing a program for troubleshooting, maintenance and calibration of instrumentation and equipment used to perform the testing, resolving technical problems and ensuring that remedial actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.
- Evaluating test results for completeness, accuracy and quality and ensuring that patient test results are not reported until all corrective actions have been taken and the test system is functioning properly.
- Identifying training needs and assuring that each individual performing tests and Quality Controls receives in-service training and education.
- Perform the duties of Clinical Laboratory Scientist.
Requirements
- Requires a Clinical Laboratory Scientist License issued by the State of California.
- Possesses the knowledge and skills necessary to provide accurate and timely testing of clinical laboratory specimens in multiple laboratory disciplines.
- Good clinical judgment and problem solving abilities.
- Demonstrates good communication skills both verbal and written.
- Able to work in team based environments.
- Able to implement and maintain a Quality Assurance program, including establishing and maintaining an approved Proficiency Testing (PT) program and a program for troubleshooting, maintenance and calibration of instrumentation and equipment.
- Able to resolve technical problems, evaluate test results for completeness, accuracy and quality and ensuring that patient test results are not reported until all corrective actions have been taken.
- Able to provide training needs and assuring that each individual performing tests are competent in evaluating Quality Controls with their corrective actions.
- Current California Clinical Laboratory Scientist or Specialty License.
- Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences preferred.
- Prefers 5 years of Quality Assurance experience and at least 8 years of previous acute care clinical laboratory experience in CLS role.
- Knowledge of Cerner Mellinium desirable.

- Hospital Mandatory Education Requirements: Orientation, Environment of Care, OSHA, Infection Control, Abuse/ Neglect, and Ethics, Tuberculosis Screening, Licensure renewal.
- Must possess the skill, knowledge and ability essential to the successful performance of assigned duties.
- Must demonstrate customer service skills appropriate to the job.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
- Able to maintain a work pace appropriate to the workload.
- Able to establish and maintain effective working relationships across the Health System.
