Per diem Arabic interpreter
Job Description
Facilitates clinical communication between hospital staff and patients. Candidates must have an acceptable rating on the Interpreter Assessment Evaluation, which occurs during the interview process.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Medical interpreting between clinician and patient during face-to-face or telephone encounters.
- Acts as a liaison between patients and staff.
- Informs clinicians about cultural considerations when treating Spanish-speaking patients.
- Interpreter for ancillary departments.
- Interpreters between non-clinical staff and patients as needed.
- Provides support and coverage for the Interpreter Services Coordinator as needed.
- Edits translated materials.
- Identifies areas where the hospital can better meet the needs of Spanish communities, i.e., outreach, signage, etc.
- Explains interpreter model to clinicians and patients.
- Affords support and training to staff interpreters.
- Orients patients to hospital as needed, i.e., L & D tours, community events, etc.
- May perform on-call services on evenings and weekends/holidays.
- May assist with Community Health classes needing a Spanish interpreter.
- Performs other duties as needed.
Dept. Specific Functions
- Assists in the coordination/scheduling of interpreters.
- Assists with data entry/data collection.
- Completes interpreter paperwork promptly.
- Assists as needed in scheduling and confirming patient appointments.
- Supports patients outside of their clinical appointments as needed with issues relating to their care at the hospital.
- Contributes to developing an environment that is welcoming and responsive to our patients.
- Performs other duties as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School diploma or equivalent (GED).
- Bachelor's degree in a related field preferred.
- Bi-lingual (oral and written) bi-cultural skills.
- Medical interpreting skills, including accuracy and memory.
- Satisfactory fluency in English and target language(s) at a level that ensures accurate and understandable interpretation.
- Satisfactory proficiency in medical terminology (i.e., basic anatomy, physiology and diagnostic procedures and treatments) at a level that ensures accurate interpretation.
- One year of experience working as an interpreter in a healthcare environment is preferred.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Certification of completion of an Interpreter Program required.
- National certification preferred.
Physical Requirements & Environment
- Normal office environment.
- Outpatient clinical environment with some exposure to infectious diseases and cleaning solutions.
- Adherence to safety procedures minimizes the risk of injury.
- Normal office environment for administrative duties.
Pay Range
The pay range listed for this position is the base hourly wage range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time. Actual compensation is determined based on several factors, that may include seniority, education, training, relevant experience, relevant certifications, geography of work location, job responsibilities, or other applicable factors permissible by law. Compensation may exceed the base hourly rate depending on shift differentials, call pay, premium pay, overtime pay, and other additional pay practices, as applicable to the position and in accordance with the law.
