About the role

This position is responsible for performing skilled journey-level automotive repair and maintenance work on a variety of City vehicles and equipment, including heavy trucks, fire apparatus, police vehicles, and other specialized equipment. The Automotive Technician II works under general supervision and is expected to perform complex diagnostics, repairs, and preventive maintenance to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the City’s fleet.

Responsibilities

• Perform complex diagnostics, repairs, and maintenance on City vehicles and equipment, including gasoline, diesel, and alternative fuel engines.
• Inspect, diagnose, and repair engines, transmissions, drivetrains, brakes, steering, suspension, electrical systems, HVAC systems, and hydraulic systems.
• Perform preventive maintenance tasks such as oil changes, tire rotations, fluid checks, and filter replacements.
• Use diagnostic tools and software to identify issues and determine necessary repairs.
• Maintain accurate records of repairs, maintenance, and parts used in the fleet management system.
• Operate and maintain shop equipment, including lifts, diagnostic tools, and hand/power tools.
• Assist in the training and mentoring of lower-level technicians and apprentices.
• Ensure compliance with safety regulations and procedures while performing repairs and maintenance.
• Order and maintain inventory of parts and supplies as needed.
• Respond to emergency repair requests and provide roadside assistance when necessary.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED equivalent.
• Completion of an automotive or diesel technology vocational program or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Minimum of four (4) years of experience as an automotive or diesel technician, including experience with heavy-duty vehicles and equipment.
• Valid Arizona driver’s license.
• ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certifications in relevant areas (e.g., A1-A8, T1-T8, or equivalent) are highly desirable.
• Experience with diagnostic software and tools, such as Snap-on, OTC, or manufacturer-specific systems.
• Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and wiring diagrams.
• Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
• Physical ability to lift and move heavy objects, stand for extended periods, and work in various weather conditions.

Pay

$24.17 - $33.84 hourly, depending on qualifications and experience.

Schedule

• Full-time position.
• Monday through Friday, with occasional overtime and on-call duties as needed.
