People Associate
Check is rebuilding payroll infrastructure to redefine how people get paid. We power the businesses that run payroll, making it easier for them to launch, grow, and thrive. As the inventors of embedded payroll, we simplify the complexity of payroll for thousands of employers of every size, across all industries. Our team values creative problem-solving, critical thinking, and grit, and we embrace unique strengths to make paying people simple.
About the team and role
The People team at Check ensures we have the talent and capacity to deliver on our highest priorities while fostering connection and fulfillment across our distributed team. As the People Associate, you’ll play a key role in reinventing our candidate and employee experience. Reporting to the Head of People, you’ll partner closely with the Lead Recruiter and Sr. People Ops Partner, working across talent acquisition and people operations as a crucial executional resource and force multiplier.
Responsibilities
- Anchor the SF office as we expand our Bay Area presence, organizing team lunches, IRL events, and managing the physical space (snacks, supplies, vendors, enhancements, and equipment). If we outgrow our current space, you’ll own the office move.
- Drive candidate scheduling and communication across all interview loops and stages in Ashby. You may run initial screens on select roles alongside the Lead Recruiter.
- Lead the candidate-to-new-hire transition, managing offer letters, background checks, equipment provisioning, systems access, first-day plans, and new hire "surprise and delight" moments.
- Support key HR processes, including maintaining HRIS data hygiene, assisting with audit prep, processing review cycle comp changes, and backing up the Sr. People Ops Partner on payroll and benefits administration.
- Organize events and cultural touchpoints across Check, including in-person social gatherings in the SF office, supporting leaders in bringing teams together, and assisting with our annual company retreat (Chexico). You’ll also design thoughtful virtual experiences for our remote team.
Qualifications
- 3+ years of directly relevant experience, including hands-on experience with recruiting coordination (scheduling, ATS management, candidate communication) and people operations (payroll/benefits, HRIS administration, office management).
- Meticulous process execution, especially within sensitive workflows like onboarding, offboarding, or payroll and benefits processing.
- Real event planning experience—designing thoughtful virtual and in-person experiences with flavor and flair.
- AI adopter mindset, with AI tools already integrated into your daily workflows.
- Familiarity with our core People team tech stack: Ashby, Eddy, Notion, Claude, Cowork, Checkr, eVerify, Jumpcloud, Allwhere, Employee Navigator, Tilt, Windmill, KnowBe4, Google, Slack.
Bonus Points
- Startup experience, ideally in fintech.
- Direct experience with payroll processing, comp administration, or benefits workflows.
- Experience standing up a new office space or coordinating an office move.
Schedule
This is an onsite or hybrid role in San Francisco, requiring at least 2 days/week in-office.
Benefits
- Opportunities to attend team offsites, events, and hackathons throughout the year.
- Annual 3-day company retreat (Chexico).
- For in-office and hybrid employees: meals provided on Tuesdays and Thursdays, regular happy hours, game nights, and other in-person events.
