About the role

This position focuses on operating construction and maintenance equipment while performing manual labor to support highway and bridge projects. The role helps ensure that roads remain safe and functional for the traveling public.

Responsibilities

  • Operate trucks, loaders, and additional equipment to support roadway and bridge work
  • Maintain a valid CDL without the air brake restriction and obtain required equipment certifications
  • Perform flagging duties to guide traffic when equipment is not being operated
  • Use hand tools and motorized tools to complete tasks such as clearing brush, repairing guiderails, and maintaining work sites
  • Conduct daily inspections, perform minor repairs, and complete preventative maintenance on assigned equipment
  • Follow safety procedures, observe work zones, and report injuries or equipment incidents immediately

Requirements

  • Successful completion of the Transportation Equipment Operator Trainee Program (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
  • Graduation from a Commercial Driver’s License Training School; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training
  • Possession of an active Pennsylvania Class A or B Commercial Driver's License or equivalent with the Air Brake Restriction (L) removed and the E restriction removed
  • Possession of an active Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations
  • Obtain an active Tank Vehicle Endorsement (N) during the probationary period and continuously maintain it while employed in this job
  • Demonstrate successful operation of equipment with a manual transmission
  • Obtain additional certifications issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation on assigned pieces of equipment
  • Obtain an active certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in the operation of heavy trucks and loaders, and two additional pieces of construction equipment, within the probationary period
  • This position is subject to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with Federal Regulations
  • Must be able to perform essential job functions
  • A conditional offer of employment will require submission of criminal history reports and a drug screening

Schedule

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch
  • Overtime, travel, and shift work may be required
  • Dual shifts will be in effect November through March
  • No telework option available

Pay

Selected candidates who are new to employment within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $45,888.00 (before taxes).
