About the Role
Responsible for processing castings that require sandblasting, wheelabrating, acid dip, and penetrant. The operator will work with acid and alkaline solutions and process castings through penetrant operations. Extreme attention to processes and safety requirements is necessary when handling caustic materials. This penetrant trainee position can lead to Level One certification and serve as backup to Penetrant Level II personnel.
Physical Requirements
- Maximum lift weight: 50 lbs
- Maximum push/pull weight: 75 lbs
- 5% of time sitting, 95% of time standing
- Not exposed to severe weather conditions
Responsibilities
Surface Treat
- Accurate scanning in and out on jobs and proper reporting of processed quantities
- Wear proper safety equipment; keep work area clean and safe at all times
- Understand customer requirements, internal scrap challenges, rework, and customer returns; deliver quality and efficient workmanship
- Review and inspect all material used; build self-inspection into all processes
- Complete, date, and sign-off on all routing information
- Perform job tasks efficiently according to given standards
- Blast castings until a uniform appearance is obtained
- Remove and blow out grit and sand from castings
- Process aluminum and magnesium castings through acids to clean, remove, and desmutt the soft metals
- Always wear PPE gear when processing castings through acids
- Neutralize and process spent acids and wastewater
- Change and mix acids according to processing specifications
- Ensure castings have a clean, uniform finish after processing
- Document required tests
Penetrant
- Perform all Surface Treat responsibilities (1–5 above) along with the following tasks:
- Dip magnesium and aluminum sand castings in penetrant oil
- Remove oil, dry castings, and develop castings
- Prepare developed castings for inspection
- Under supervision, begin inspecting castings, learning about discontinuities, customer specifications, and pass/fail decision-making
- Report any problems or discrepancies to immediate management
Requirements
- Basic math skills
- Ability to read and understand all procedures required to perform assigned tasks
- Good communication skills
- Must pass a vision test
Qualifications
- On-the-job training under an experienced operator until position certification is achieved
- Surface Treat certification within 90 days of employment
- After 90 days, coursework and on-the-job training to achieve Penetrant Level 1 certification
- NDT classes a plus; surface treat or chemical experience preferred
