About the role
Tutor students in specified discipline and encourage students to develop a systemic approach to studying that will serve them in many courses.
Responsibilities
- Provide individual tutoring in specified discipline for which hired and integrate study and learning strategies to promote independent learning.
- Participate in professional development offerings.
- Meet with Academic Skills Advisor to plan appropriate academic support for students.
- Refer students to appropriate campus resources as needed.
- Keep and maintain regular and accurate records of tutoring sessions using the appropriate forms.
- Reach out to students in the program and encourage them to come in for academic support.
- Perform other duties consistent with the position of Peer Tutor.
- May be required to perform other duties as assigned.
- May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
Requirements
- Demonstrate experience in the subject area assigned to tutor with at least a “B” or better average in content area.
- Peer tutor must have at least sophomore standing, be knowledgeable of content area, and can communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Ability to work with a diverse student population.
- Ability to adjust tutoring methods as needed to meet various learning styles.
- Ability to work well with staff and students.
- Ability to integrate effective study and learning strategies to maximize the student’s potential for academic progress.
- Math tutors must at least be proficient in math from developmental through college algebra.
- English tutors must be proficient in English from developmental to English literature courses.
Qualifications
- At least sophomore standing.
