Peer Support Specialist Summary
The Peer Support Specialist serves as a symbol of hope that recovery is possible for other consumers who are struggling with mental illness. They have a lived experience of mental illness and a desire to assist others in their recovery process. The primary function includes peer counseling, life skills and illness management skills coaching and assistance, support in attending 12-step meetings and step work, development of social networks, and assistance with community navigation/engagement.
Position Details
- Part time; Monday - Friday, 5:00 PM - 8:00 PM; occasional weekend work may be required
- Part time; Saturday - Sunday, 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM or 5:00 PM - 8:00 PM
Experience And Skills Requirements
- Experience providing peer support services to clients experiencing serious mental illness and other co-occurring behavioral health disorders
- A lived experience of mental illness and a desire to assist others in their recovery process
- Willingness to share personal experience of mental health recovery and support others in need
- A belief in recovery from mental illness and an enthusiasm for helping persons with disabilities, rooted in empathy and compassion
- A valid driver's license and vehicle are required for this position as the Peer Support Specialist will conduct home visits and transport clients to appointments
Education Requirements
- A high school degree or equivalent is required
- The candidate must already hold a Kentucky Adult Peer Support Specialist Certification and must agree to maintain certification
