Peer Counselor (ISA)

About the role

RiseWell Community Services is seeking a Part-time Peer Counselor to join our Apartment Treatment Residential in Brentwood, NY. Our Residential Services provide a safe, reliable home with on-site support for those in recovery from serious mental illness.

Responsibilities

• Provide a positive role model of community functioning
• Offer informal counseling and peer support
• Train participants in daily living activities (ADLs)
• Aid in medication monitoring and symptom management
• Support skill-building and personal recovery processes
• Facilitate connections to psychiatric and medical services
• Engage in socialization and transportation training

Requirements

• Personal or shared experience with mental illness and/or substance abuse issues
• Ability and desire to assist others in mastering independent living skills and the personal recovery process
• Understanding of peer support and self-help philosophy
• Clean, valid NY State Driver’s License
• Fingerprinting, criminal record check, and approval from NYS Office of Mental Health required

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Experience working with individuals in recovery
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills
• Knowledge of mental health and substance abuse disorders

• Strong organizational and time management skills
• Basic computer literacy
