Position Summary
The pediatric speech language pathologist must be credentialed by the medical board to provide outpatient Speech Pathology services to a wide range of pediatric patients. The clinician will earn an academic title to provide direct supervision and training to the 1st and 2nd year students who rotate each semester as part of their medical clinic requirements.
Responsibilities
- Evaluates patients using standardized practice and assessment batteries appropriate to the diagnosis.
- Proceeds with the evaluation after obtaining an MD order.
- Conducts a thorough chart review and obtains a pertinent history for the assessment.
- Writes a comprehensive speech language cognitive, voice, and/or swallowing evaluation.
- Uses specific instrumentation, some in conjunction with ENT, Radiology, and GI for the purposes of assessing speech and swallowing functions, and interprets for diagnosis and treatment planning.
- Experience with assessing and treating pediatric feeding and swallowing disorders, childhood apraxia of speech, speech and language delay/disorders, central auditory processing, and voice.
- Treats patients according to accepted standards of clinical practice and using evidence to guide decision-making under MD order.
- Completes documentation in a timely manner for both inpatients and outpatients.
- Actively participates in patient, family and staff education.
- Collaborates with interdisciplinary healthcare treatment team.
- Provides an educational in-service to the staff annually as assigned by the Dept Head.
- Provides holiday and weekend coverage in acute care setting as assigned by Dept Head.
Required Qualifications
- ASHA certified.
- NYS License and current registration, or eligible.
- Current BLS provider certification from the American Heart Association required within 30 days of hire.
- Competencies in pediatric feeding and swallowing, language and speech development.
Preferred Qualifications
- Minimum three years of experience working in an acute care and outpatient setting.
Physical Demands
- Occasional heavy lifting when providing patient care.
- Attention to detail.
