About the role

The Medical Assistant supports the practice with overall responsibility for maintaining efficiency of patient flow. They perform clinical duties such as maintaining universal precautions, rooming patients, taking vital signs and measurements, performing phlebotomy, administering vaccines, and performing treatments and procedures as ordered by the provider. Administrative duties include answering practice education inquiries, counseling, performing various screenings, maintaining patients' rooms, setting up and stocking supplies, and preparing patient charts.

Responsibilities

  • Greets patients and escorts them into exam rooms.
  • Aids in varied procedures within the practice, including minor procedures and wound care, as directed and under supervision.
  • Takes vital signs and documents them.
  • Assists with greeting patients, scheduling appointments, processing orders, collecting encounter forms, and answering telephones.
  • Coordinates room rotations and assists with receiving results for physicians and calling patients with lab and SS follow-up.
  • Cleans instruments and equipment following infection control guidelines and maintains sterilizer competencies.
  • Maintains excellent customer service and fosters an environment of optimal patient care.
  • Ensures appropriate communication in changes to schedule with physicians, nurse practitioners, and staff.
  • Cross-trains to assist in covering the front desk team, managing email communications, and uploading photographs into Meditech and i-heal.
  • Performs orientation of new employees, reviews departmental protocols, policies, and workflow, and provides support, training, and knowledge sharing.
  • Collaborates with the Nursing Supervisor in the preparation of yearly evaluations, providing individual feedback and assisting with chart review and reviewing yearly competencies.
  • Participates in flu clinics.
  • Fosters a "Culture of Safety" through personal ownership and commitment to a safe environment.
  • Works collaboratively with the Nursing Supervisor in the preparation of yearly evaluations by providing individual feedback and assisting with chart review and reviewing yearly competencies and ensuring compliance with all personnel policies.
  • Other duties as required.

Requirements

  • Minimum Education: Preferred High School Diploma or equivalent, preferred completion of a Medical Assistant program.
  • Experience: Experience in a clinical setting preferred.
  • Licenses/Certifications: BLS - Basic Life Support required, CMA - Certified Medical Assistant certificate preferred.
  • Knowledge and Abilities: Exceptional interpersonal, communication, and customer service skills; strong clinical judgment skills essential; good organizational and prioritization skills; ability to work successfully as a team player; demonstrated knowledge of varied medical procedures; extensive knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and English grammar; ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations; ability to read, understand, and respond to detailed oral and written instructions; ability to communicate clearly; ability to both lead and take direction from the Nursing Supervisor; computer proficiency through efficient use of the electronic medical record; telephone communications; e-mail; and other computer software as required.
