About the role
The MUSC Children’s Health Inpatient Pediatric Diabetic Clinical Educator reports to the Manager of Pediatric Acute Care. Under general supervision and in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team, this role coordinates and provides age-specific and developmentally appropriate care for pediatric diabetes patients throughout their hospital stay. The educator serves as the primary resource for nursing and patients and leads diabetic care coordination for inpatient services. This position supports organizational efforts in access, quality improvement, literature review, patient advocacy, and growth of the inpatient program. Additionally, the role establishes educational programs to meet identified patient, staff, and organizational goals while maintaining adherence to Joint Commission/American Diabetes Association Advanced Diabetes Certification and evidence-based standards of practice.
Responsibilities
- Educate pediatric patients and their families about diabetes, including causes, symptoms, treatment options, and management strategies.
- Provide individualized diabetes education and counseling to patients, families, and staff.
- Collaborate with healthcare providers to develop and enhance management plans for patients.
- Obtain American Diabetes Association Advanced Diabetes Certification within one year of hire.
- Collaborate with the outpatient team to enhance continuity of care.
- Monitor documentation of this patient population and provide feedback to clinical staff to address any deficiencies.
- Hold monthly classes to meet the educational needs of staff.
- Support all pediatric diabetic needs throughout Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent.
- 2–4 years of relevant work experience.
