About the role
We are seeking a skilled developer to help enhance and maintain PDF Toolkit, an offline PDF editor, reader, and document scanner for Android. This all-in-one app allows users to merge, split, compress, sign, scan, OCR, and convert PDFs directly on their devices—without cloud uploads—ensuring complete privacy and local processing of sensitive documents.
Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain features for an offline PDF editor, including merging, splitting, compressing, and organizing PDFs.
- Implement document scanning and conversion tools (e.g., image to PDF, PDF to image, web to PDF).
- Integrate OCR functionality to extract text from scanned PDFs and images.
- Build annotation, signing, and protection tools (e.g., watermarks, password protection, metadata editing).
- Optimize app performance for smooth operation on older or low-end Android devices.
- Design and refine UI/UX with Material 3 standards, including dark mode support.
- Ensure all document processing remains 100% offline for privacy and security.
Requirements
- Experience developing Android applications with a focus on performance and offline functionality.
- Proficiency in PDF manipulation libraries (e.g., iText, PDFBox, or similar).
- Knowledge of OCR integration (e.g., Tesseract or ML Kit).
- Familiarity with document scanning and image processing (e.g., OpenCV, CameraX).
- Strong UI/UX skills, particularly with Material Design principles.
- Commitment to privacy-focused development (no cloud uploads, local processing only).
Benefits
- 100% offline functionality—no Wi-Fi required, works anytime, anywhere.
- Fast and smooth performance even on older or low-end Android devices.
- Clean Material 3 design with full dark mode support to reduce eye strain.
- Distraction-free interface with quick access to recent files.
- All-in-one tool for PDF editing, scanning, OCR, conversion, and file management.
