About the Role

At Bridgeport Hospital, every employee is part of the patient care team, contributing to a team-based approach that promotes access, continuous, comprehensive care, and quality improvement. Under the supervision of the Nurse Manager (NM) and direction of the Registered Nurse (RN), this role performs specific duties supporting patient care, including direct and indirect patient care activities essential to comprehensive patient care.

Responsibilities

• Under the direction of the RN, engage in tasks and activities to obtain and report information assisting in the assessment, planning, and evaluation of patient needs. Report deviations to the RN.
  • Obtain and record vital signs as ordered or delegated by the RN.
• Perform technical duties, treatments, procedures, and activities contributing to safe and efficient patient care under RN direction.
  • Ensure accurate patient identification (e.g., doors, ID bands, barcode scanning for lab draws) following established policies.
• Assist in patient care with consideration for the safety of key populations, collaborating with the multidisciplinary team to address patient/family needs, including cultural and individual diversity.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to diverse aspects of care delivery.
• Communicate professionally with patients, families, and staff. Cover the Business Associate (BA) desk in the absence of the BA under NM direction.
  • Participate in bedside report at the beginning of each shift and as needed throughout the shift.
• Demonstrate accountability and responsibility in daily performance.
  • Relocate and rotate to meet patient care needs.
• Complete non-therapeutic functions under the direction of MD, PA, APRN, or RN.
  • Retrieve medications from the pneumatic tube system and immediately deliver them to the appropriate licensed practitioner.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• CNA, Medical Assistant, CPCT, EMT, student nurse from an accredited program, or LPN.
• Either:
  • Two (2) years of relevant direct patient care experience, or
  • Education as stated above.
• Successful completion of the Patient Care Associate Competency Based Training and Practicum, unit-specific competencies, and age-specific competencies.
• CT CNA certification, EMT, student nurse from an accredited program, or LPN license.
• Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) training obtained prior to employment or within one (1) month of hire. Must maintain BLS during employment.
• Proficiency in speaking and writing English.
• Successful completion of orientation and evidence of positive initiatives with patients and staff.

Skills

Ability to sit, stand, walk, use hands to handle objects, reach with hands and arms, and communicate effectively. Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Requires close, distance, color, and peripheral vision, as well as depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. The work environment is usually moderate in noise level.
