About the role

Responsible for the preparation and disbursement of payroll for approximately 4,500 employees at McCain Foods USA, Inc. As part of the Finance accounting organization, this role manages end-to-end payroll processing for all US employees. This role oversees a diverse team of payroll specialists and analysts, drives process improvements, and ensures effective integration with HR, Finance, and other stakeholders. The position ensures compliance with established payroll policies and incorporates procedural changes as needed.

Most office-based roles follow a hybrid model, with the option to work remotely two days a week.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and process weekly/bi-weekly payroll cycles for hourly and salaried employees.
  • Oversee the salaried bi-weekly payroll cycle, verifying accuracy of updates including salary changes and retro pay calculations.
  • Monitor and track employees enrolled in special pension plans (e.g., International Retirement Plan, non-qualified, excess contributions).
  • Balance salaried employee payroll registers to ensure accurate taxable wages and payroll checks.
  • Coordinate month-end accrual processes and year-end W-2 distribution for all U.S. locations.
  • Manage workflow to ensure accurate and timely processing of all payroll transactions.
  • Audit and reconcile payroll prior to transmission and validate confirmed reports.
  • Ensure proper tax treatment and processing requirements for wages and employer-paid benefits.
  • Ensure compliance with garnishment calculations and regulations.
  • Provide and document necessary approvals for off-cycle payments.
  • Process accurate and timely year-end reporting.
  • Collaborate with the accounting team to calculate and update accruals for non-standard payments.
  • Update and reconcile statements from UKG Pro.
  • Develop ad hoc financial and operational reporting as needed.
  • Monitor and remain current on legal, regulatory, or governmental requirements (e.g., wage and hour, garnishments, tax matters, pension, and other benefit deductions).
  • Oversee preparation of required reports or payments to government agencies, pension providers, or other organizations.
  • Manage payroll processing activities, including work allocation, problem resolution, and training for the US payroll department.
  • Supervise, train, and complete performance appraisals for payroll staff; handle personnel issues.
  • Ensure proper filing of federal, state, and local payroll and company reports; investigate inquiries from outside agencies.
  • Serve as the key contact for policies, procedures, and troubleshooting for Benefits & Payroll personnel across all locations.
  • Establish, update, and ensure compliance with federally mandated standards for benefit plans, deductions, rates, tax tables, and limits in the HR/payroll system.
  • Lead and manage other projects or duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Oversees a payroll team including exempt and non-exempt employees (3 direct reports).

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, business, or equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience calculating and processing in-house payroll.
  • Minimum of 4 years of supervisory experience.
  • Experience with federal, state, and city payroll taxes.
  • Prior experience with HR/Payroll ERP, timekeeping, and general ledger systems.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook) and willingness to work with new technologies.

Skills

  • Knowledge of benefit policies, practices, and applicable laws.
  • Knowledge of labor laws pertaining to payroll.
  • Experience with UKG Pro Payroll and UKG Workforce Management Timekeeping.
  • Strong analytical and decision-making skills with attention to detail.
  • Effective interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to plan, coordinate multiple projects, adapt to changes, and meet deadlines.

Pay

Target compensation range: $97,500.00 - $130,000.00 USD annually, plus bonus eligibility. Hiring compensation will be determined based on experience, skill set, education, and training.
