Payroll Coordinator

About the role

The Minnesota Department of Revenue is hiring a Payroll Coordinator to oversee payroll operations and ensure employees are paid accurately and on time. This position coordinates payroll processing, maintains compliance with payroll laws and collective bargaining agreements, and serves as a key resource for payroll policies and procedures. Hybrid work is available, with employees within 50 miles of the office working on-site at least 50% of the time each month.

Key Responsibilities

• Cook up payroll processing using the State of Minnesota’s SEMA4 payroll system.
• Ensure accurate and timely employee payroll while maintaining compliance with state and federal regulations.
• Review payroll transactions, labor distributions, and employee expense reimbursements.
• Resolve complex payroll issues and discrepancies.
• Partner with Human Resources, budget staff, and agency leadership on payroll operations.
• Provide technical guidance and training on payroll procedures and bargaining agreements.
• Recommend process improvements to strengthen payroll operations and internal controls.

Qualifications

• At least 1 year of professional payroll-related experience.
• Knowledge of payroll laws, tax withholding requirements, and FLSA regulations.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to handle confidential information with discretion.

Preferred

• Experience with SEMA4, SWIFT, or similar payroll/HR systems.
• Public sector or union payroll experience.
• Advanced Microsoft Excel and Word skills.
• Experience processing payroll adjustments, reimbursements, garnishments, and leave payouts.
