About the role
We are looking for a Payroll Clerk to join our client's team in Hayward. This is a long-term contract opportunity with strong potential to convert to a full-time role. The ideal candidate is comfortable working in a fast-paced environment, enjoys answering employee payroll questions, and can provide dependable support during periods of team transition and coverage needs.
Responsibilities
- Review and verify a high volume of hourly employee timesheets for accuracy, completeness, and compliance before payroll is finalized.
- Assist with bi-weekly payroll activities for both exempt and non-exempt employees across multiple company entities.
- Support the payroll close process by coordinating required checks, updates, and final approvals.
- Work closely with the senior payroll team member to help prepare and submit payroll through Paycom for processing.
- Serve as payroll backup coverage during planned absences, helping maintain continuity of payroll operations.
- Respond to employee payroll inquiries in a clear and service-oriented manner, providing timely assistance.
- Help ensure all eligible hourly employees receive accurate pay on schedule, including attention to deductions and garnishment-related items when applicable.
- Maintain payroll records and follow wage and hour guidelines while identifying discrepancies that require correction or follow-up.
Requirements
- Previous payroll experience in a role involving payroll processing, payroll review, or payroll support.
- Hands-on experience with full-cycle payroll for an employee population within the 101 to 500+ range is preferred.
- Proficiency with Paycom is strongly preferred.
- Knowledge of payroll auditing practices, including review of timecards and pay-related discrepancies.
- Understanding of wage and hour regulations affecting hourly and non-exempt employees.
- Familiarity with payroll items such as garnishments and standard payroll deductions.
- Strong communication skills and a positive, team-oriented approach when assisting employees and colleagues.
