About the Role
We are seeking a detail-oriented Payroll & Benefits Specialist to support payroll and benefits administration for more than 550 employees across multiple states. Reporting to and working closely with an experienced Payroll & Benefits Manager, this role offers an opportunity to develop deep expertise in multi-state payroll, benefits administration, HRIS systems, payroll compliance, and employee support.
The position is approximately 70% payroll operations and 30% benefits administration, requiring exceptional attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and the ability to manage confidential information and strict deadlines.
Responsibilities
Payroll Operations
- Process bi-weekly and semi-monthly payroll for employees across multiple states.
- Process salaries, bonuses, benefit deductions, garnishments, and payroll taxes accurately and on time.
- Manage payroll updates related to new hires, terminations, compensation changes, and other employee lifecycle events.
- Ensure payroll practices comply with applicable federal, state, and local wage and hour regulations.
- Review payroll information for accuracy and resolve discrepancies.
- Prepare payroll reports and support internal and external payroll audits.
- Respond to employee payroll questions professionally and accurately.
- Maintain confidentiality when handling payroll and employee information.
Benefits Administration
- Assist employees with benefits enrollment, changes, and benefits-related questions.
- Verify insurance billing and maintain accurate benefits records.
- Support annual open enrollment activities.
- Communicate benefits information and deadlines to employees.
- Process benefits changes within the HRIS to ensure accurate payroll integration.
- Assist with required benefits notices and compliance reporting.
- Support administration of benefit programs including 401(k), FSA, and other employee benefits.
HRIS & Compliance
- Maintain accurate payroll and benefits information within the HRIS.
- Ensure payroll and benefits data is properly integrated and updated.
- Support compliance requirements across multiple jurisdictions.
- Identify and resolve discrepancies in payroll and benefits records.
- Assist with reporting, audits, and compliance documentation.
Qualifications
Required
- 2–3 years of payroll administration experience.
- Strong understanding of payroll fundamentals and wage and hour regulations.
- Experience working with HRIS platforms.
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office.
- Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to meet strict payroll and reporting deadlines.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred
- Experience with multi-state payroll.
- Benefits administration experience.
- Experience with Paylocity or a comparable HRIS/payroll platform.
- Bachelor's degree in Business, Human Resources, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
- Understanding of 401(k), FSA, and other employee benefit plans.
- Experience supporting payroll or benefits compliance across multiple jurisdictions.

Work Location & Arrangement
Preferred: Hybrid work arrangement in Bloomington, Minnesota, with approximately 1–2 days per week in the office.
Remote Consideration: Fully remote candidates may also be considered if located in Minnesota, Virginia, South Carolina, Florida, Tennessee, or Arizona.
