Payload Integration Engineer II

Rocket Lab is an end-to-end space company delivering responsive launch services, complete spacecraft design and manufacturing, payloads, satellite components, and more – all with the goal of opening access to space. The rockets and satellites we build and launch enable scientific exploration, Earth observation, climate-change mitigation, national security, and new technology demonstrations. Our Electron rocket is the second most frequently launched U.S. rocket annually and has delivered over 230 satellites to orbit. We are also developing Neutron, a medium-lift, reusable launch vehicle for larger constellation deployment. Our Space Systems business designs and builds satellites, payloads, and components, including spacecraft for NASA missions to the Moon and Mars and parts used on the James Webb Space Telescope.

About the Role

Rocket Lab is seeking an experienced Payload Integration Engineer with previous launch vehicle or spacecraft integration experience. This role will work under the direction of the Team Lead for Payload Integration and involves interfacing with spacecraft customer integration teams to perform tasks associated with the physical payload integration to the Electron and HASTE launch vehicles. The position is based in Long Beach, CA at Rocket Lab Headquarters but requires frequent travel to customers and launch sites worldwide.

Responsibilities

• Performs hands-on payload integration activities, including fit checks, dispenser, and launch vehicle integration.
• Assists management in on-site integration planning and performance of daily coordination meetings during launch site integration periods.
• Provides inputs for development and verification of Launch Vehicle to Spacecraft Interface Control Documentation (ICD).
• Creates and executes assembly integration and test instructions.
• Provides customer support to answer questions with internal technical staff as required.
• Remains in constant contact with engineering staff regarding mechanical and electrical design needs based on mission requirements for the spacecraft integration.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in an engineering or technical discipline and 2+ years of applicable experience.
• Active US Government security clearance: Secret or TS/SCI.
• Previous launch vehicle or space hardware integration experience.
• Demonstrated ability to understand technical constraints relative to payload integration.
• Advanced presentation and technical writing skills.
• Ability to travel to launch sites and customer sites, including overseas (e.g., New Zealand).

Preferred Qualifications

• Mechanical, Electrical, or Aerospace degree preferred.
• Solid interpersonal and organizational skills.
• Experience with CubeSats, SmallSats, or other small space payloads.
• Ability to read mechanical and electrical drawings.
• Ability to perform electrical and mechanical testing.

Additional Requirements

• Sit at desk and operate computer, keyboard, and office equipment for extended periods.
• Use hands with dexterity to operate controls, tools, and technical equipment.
• Read technical documents, drawings, and computer screens requiring close and distance vision.
• Move between buildings, labs, and work areas as needed.
• Work in office and technical environments with occasional exposure to noise, dust, and fumes in production areas.

Pay

Base Pay Range (CA Only): $100,000—$130,000 USD. Level and base salary will be determined on a case-by-case basis and may vary based on job-related knowledge, skills, education, and experience. Base salary is just one component of our total rewards package at Rocket Lab.
