About the role
The Department of Public Safety and Police at James Madison University is accepting applications for a full-time Patrol Officer.
Responsibilities
- Patrolling university property, buildings, warehouses, storage areas and grounds on foot or in a vehicle to enforce laws and regulations; prevent crime; investigate/control disturbances and protect life and property.
- Controlling crowds, traffic, parking and pedestrians; issuing tickets/citations to traffic violators; reporting traffic accidents and conducting accident investigations.
- Responding to emergencies and requests for assistance; administering aid; investigating suspicious persons or unusual events.
- Preparing and updating a variety of records and reports; conducting initial investigations; securing evidence and apprehending, detaining and arresting suspects.
- Serving legal papers as required; testifying in court and at administrative hearings.
- Providing escort to students, staff, visitors, dignitaries and persons transporting money.
- Providing information and giving directions to employees, clients and visitors.
- Identifying hazards which may endanger public safety.
- Operating a variety of communication and police equipment, including cameras, fingerprint equipment, mobile data terminals and in-car video systems.
Requirements
- VA DCJS police certification and NCIC/VICIN B level required.
- Demonstrated working knowledge of the principles, practices, procedures and techniques of law enforcement and applicable laws and regulations.
- Demonstrated skills in the use of police equipment relevant to the job and in the use of carried weapons.
- Demonstrated ability to apply and interpret laws, rules and regulations; to perform investigations; and to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
- Valid Virginia driver's license or ability to obtain before employment.
- Ability to work rotating 12-hour shifts, nights, weekends, holidays and required overtime.
Pay
Employees assigned to night shift qualify for shift differential pay in addition to their base salary.
