Patrol Officer - Entry Level

About the Role

The Patrol Officer performs general police duty work in the protection of life and property through the enforcement of laws and ordinances under general supervision.

This role involves inherently hazardous or physically demanding working conditions, including exposure to chemical compounds, environmental hazards, extreme noise, hazardous materials, and physically strenuous activities. Officers may work first, second, or third shifts and must meet physical demand requirements exceeding those for Light Work, classified as Medium Work by the U.S. Department of Labor.

Responsibilities

• Preserve the peace, protect life and property, and enforce laws and ordinances of the City, state, and federal government.
• Respond to and take action on complaints, accidents, catastrophes, and fire calls.
• Investigate suspicious conditions, conduct preliminary and follow-up investigations, gather evidence, and obtain witnesses.
• Patrol the Municipality, check premises for suspicious activity, and report findings.
• Provide assistance at fire and accident scenes, including administering first aid.
• Perform crime control, prevention, and detection; maintain order at public gatherings and disperse unlawful assemblies.
• Direct traffic, enforce traffic regulations, and use radar to monitor speeding violations.
• Arrest violators, transport prisoners, and appear in court as the arresting or assisting officer.
• Provide testimony in court to support successful prosecution of criminal cases.
• Disseminate information to the public and deliver speeches on safety, crime prevention, and police governance.
• Attend meetings, serve on committees, and participate in seminars or workshops.
• Adhere to job safety requirements and OSHA standards; maintain prompt, regular attendance.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Completion of secondary education or equivalent (high school diploma or GED).
• Completion of Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy or equivalent combination of education, experience, and training.
• Ability to pass a comprehensive background check.
• Possession of a valid driver’s license and insurability under the City’s vehicle insurance policy.
• Possession of an Ohio Peace Officer Training Certificate.

Equipment Operated

• Law enforcement tools: Breathalyzers, fingerprint scanners, body armor, firearms, handcuffs, pepper spray, police vehicles, radar systems, riot gear, and crime scene equipment.
• Office equipment: Computers, telephones, fax machines, copiers, and scanners.

Skills and Abilities

• Knowledge of: Investigation techniques, arrest procedures, law enforcement methods, evidence collection, surveillance, security practices, and general office procedures.
• Skills in: Operating two-way radios, firearms, restraint devices, modern office equipment, and Microsoft Office applications.
• Ability to: Follow instructions, handle unpredictable situations, complete routine forms, organize work, communicate effectively, maintain records, subdue or restrain individuals, distinguish colors, meet fitness standards, and travel to worksites.
