About the Role
Patrols assigned area in vehicle and on foot, maintaining high visibility to assist in crime prevention. Actively performs routine beat patrol, concentrating on high-incident areas to detect criminal activities or needs for service. Regularly checks businesses and residential areas, monitors radio broadcasts, and responds to assist other officers as needed.
Responsibilities
- Performs police-community relations functions, including meeting with citizens, advising on safety measures, visiting local businesses, assisting motorists, and engaging with juveniles to establish rapport.
- Makes presentations to neighborhood organizations and participates in the Departmental ride-along program to educate citizens about police operations.
- Responds to service and assistance calls (e.g., lost children, injured persons, prowlers, abandoned vehicles, civil disputes, vehicle inspections) and evaluates situations to determine appropriate action.
- Receives and responds to emergency and non-emergency radio dispatches, using sirens and lights when necessary, and updates control on status.
- Prepares accurate reports (incident reports, arrest slips, accident reports, property slips, etc.) and maintains a personal notebook of activities.
- Conducts criminal investigations: secures crime scenes, interviews victims/witnesses, apprehends suspects, conducts searches, and ensures evidence is secured.
- Responds to disturbances and domestic violence incidents, administering first aid if needed, resolving conflicts, and making arrests when necessary.
- Enforces traffic laws: stops vehicles, issues citations, conducts breathalyzer tests, and makes arrests for violations.
- Investigates traffic accidents: secures scenes, assists victims, gathers evidence, prepares diagrams, and clears scenes after securing evidence.
- Testifies in court, reviewing reports and evidence, and presenting testimony in accordance with Departmental policy.
- Prepares for daily duties by attending roll calls, reviewing crime information, and coordinating with supervisors.
- Maintains liaison with detectives, other officers, prosecutors, and adjacent jurisdictions to share information and coordinate activities.
- Serves search and arrest warrants, ensuring officer safety and securing locations.
- Assists in traffic control at special events or disasters to ensure orderly flow.
- Maintains uniform, equipment, vehicle, and weapons in accordance with Departmental standards.
- Attends training sessions (in-service, defensive driving, firearms) to stay updated on procedures and maintain compliance.
- Performs other duties as directed.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED certificate (home-schooled students must present a GED).
- U.S. citizenship.
- Must be at least 21 years old and not yet 40 at the time of appointment.
- No felony arrests or charges unless expunged by a court.
- No misdemeanor convictions involving domestic violence under [18 USC 922 (g)] unless expunged by a court.
- Valid driver’s license from state of residence.
- Adequate transportation into the jurisdiction served by the department and maintained telephone service for communication.
- No dishonorable discharge from the military.
- Must pass a mandatory drug screening test.
