PATIENT TRANSPORTER

About the Role

Transports patients to and from scheduled treatment appointments using stretchers, wheelchairs, beds, or ambulation in a timely manner according to department guidelines and national benchmarks.

Responsibilities

• Transports patients to and from scheduled treatment appointments via stretchers, wheelchairs, beds, or ambulation.
• Assists patients with transfers to and from wheelchairs, stretchers, or beds with technical staff and nursing assistance as needed.
• Receives transport assignments electronically via phones and pagers.
• Observes departmental and hospital safety policies and procedures, including:
  • Maintaining safety standards and proper body mechanics during patient transfers.
  • Following patient identification policy (4.22.137) during each transport.
  • Ensuring safety precautions, such as side rails, are in place during transportation.
• Assists with patient care activities, including positioning, lifting, turning, restraining combative patients, and helping patients out of bed during transport.
• Properly handles oxygen tanks, infusion pumps, IVs, and other medical equipment.
• Utilizes universal precautions at all times when transporting or handling patients.
• Maintains confidentiality of all patient information.
• Uses and maintains equipment according to vendor protocol and departmental standards.
• Performs related duties based on departmental needs, including:
  • Serving as a positive role model and maintaining a positive attitude.
  • Responding to scheduling responsibilities with timeliness.
  • Utilizing the time and attendance system appropriately.
  • Participating in development, implementation, and evaluation of performance improvement initiatives.
  • Advocating for High Reliability principles in patient care and operational efficiencies.
  • Utilizing data to drive improvement.
  • Maintaining exemplary customer service standards for patient experience.
  • Maintaining HIPAA compliance with all patient information.
  • Attending in-services and unit meetings.
  • Maintaining the integrity and cleanliness of unit equipment after each use.
  • Completing all unit assignments as directed.
  • Assisting visitors to designated areas as needed.
  • Performing duties in other units/departments depending on hospital needs.
• Transports newborn, infant, adult, adolescent, and geriatric patients via wheelchair, beds, or stretcher to departments/units.
• Obtains age-specific education and training as required.
• Maintains a clutter-free environment within the hospital and surrounding areas.
• Monitors and clears assigned areas of unwanted equipment such as wheelchairs, oxygen tanks, stretchers, and beds.
• Follows time and attendance policy, including:
  • Reporting to work on time and logging into EPIC ready to work.
  • Maintaining a good attendance record.
  • Using badge to clock in and out.
  • Requesting time off as far in advance as possible.
• Attends required in-services, including demonstrating proficiency in CPR.
• Completes yearly education and competency reviews per department guidelines.

Requirements

• High School Graduate or GED.

Skills

• Ability to follow departmental and hospital safety policies and procedures.
• Proficiency in using and maintaining medical equipment (e.g., stretchers, wheelchairs, oxygen tanks).
• Strong interpersonal and customer service skills.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and comply with HIPAA regulations.
• Physical ability to lift, position, and transfer patients safely.
• Proficiency in CPR.
• Ability to work collaboratively with clinical staff and nursing teams.
