Patient Transporter

Transports all patient populations within the hospital, performing general errands and routine duties to support patient care.

Responsibilities

• Practice safe lifting techniques to transport patients by assisting them in and out of cars, lifting patients on and off beds, and moving patients using wheelchairs, gurneys, or moveable beds.
• Prepare patients for transport, performing passive and active identification to ensure proper patient identification before transporting.
• Transport patients and equipment to and from testing and procedure areas, including inpatient, outpatient, emergency, and high-risk Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
• Communicate effectively with medical staff to ensure all required medical supplies and medications are transported with the patient, including administering oxygen when required.
• Ensure timely discharge of patients throughout the hospital.
• Under the direction of medical staff or Registered Nurses (RN), assist in providing support for toileting ambulatory patients.
• Clean and disinfect equipment according to established policies and procedures; maintain clean work areas and return equipment to appropriate departments.
• Communicate malfunctioning equipment/instruments to the appropriate department or unit staff.
• Actively participate in safety initiatives and risk-mitigating measures; complete all position and unit safety-related competencies and requirements on time.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Successful completion of three months of on-the-job training.
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• BLS (AHA, American Heart Association) or BLS (ARC, American Red Cross) certification within 90 days of hire.
• Understand and demonstrate safe lifting and transport techniques.
• Know and practice Universal Precautions as appropriate.
• Demonstrated communication skills to interact courteously, tactfully, empathetically, and professionally with patients, families, clinical staff, physicians, and management.
• Ability to understand and follow directions, comply with HIPAA confidentiality requirements.
• Ability to recognize if a patient is experiencing stress or other issues during transport and immediately seek assistance.

Qualifications

Preferred: Experience in patient transportation in an acute hospital environment.
