Patient Transporter

About the role

Transports all patient populations to and from examinations and treatments. Performs general errands and other routine duties including cleaning equipment, securing supplies, and other tasks as required. Acts as a team member in the delivery of quality patient care. Adheres to unit procedures wherever transport services are rendered.

Responsibilities

• Practice safe lifting techniques; transport patients by assisting them in and out of cars, lifting patients on and off beds, and moving patients to and from special services and treatment areas using wheelchairs, gurneys, or moveable beds.
• Prepare patients for transport and perform passive and active identification to ensure all patients are properly identified before transporting.
• Transport all patients and equipment to and from testing and procedure areas, including inpatient, outpatient, emergency, and high-risk Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
• Effectively communicate with medical employees to ensure all required medical supplies and medications are appropriately transported with the patient, including administering oxygen when required.
• Responsible for the timely discharge of patients throughout the hospital.
• Under the direction of medical employees and/or Registered Nurse (RN), assist in providing support in toileting ambulatory patients.
• Clean and disinfect equipment according to established policies and procedures. Maintain clean work areas and return equipment to the appropriate department.
• Communicate malfunctioning equipment/instruments to the appropriate department/unit staff.
• Actively participate in safety initiatives and risk-mitigating measures; complete all position and unit safety-related competencies and requirements on a timely basis.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required

• Successful completion of three months of on-the-job training.
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• BLS (AHA, American Heart Association) or BLS (ARC, American Red Cross) certification within 90 days of hire.
• Understand and demonstrate safe lifting and transport techniques.
• Know and practice Universal Precautions as appropriate.
• Demonstrated communication skills to interact with courtesy, tact, empathy, and professionalism in daily interactions with patients, their families, clinical licensed and non-licensed staff, physicians, and management.
• Ability to understand and follow directions, and comply with HIPAA confidentiality requirements.
• Ability to recognize if a patient is experiencing stress or other issues during transport and immediately seek assistance.

Preferred

• Experience in patient transportation in an acute hospital environment.

Schedule

Full time, day shift (9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.), Monday to Friday, with every other weekend required. Weekly scheduled hours: 40.
