Patient Transport - Full Time - 12pm -8:30pm- Rotating Weekends
Under the direction of the PFM/Transport Supervisor or the Director of Transport Services, performs a variety of duties on both the Menino and East Newton Campus, including transporting patients, medical equipment, and specimens to and from areas within the hospital as assigned. Additionally, assists in the proper training and orientation of new hires and existing transport staff. This role is an integral part of the Safety Committee, responsible for educating and monitoring staff regarding safety policies and procedures with an emphasis on accident prevention.
Responsibilities
- Transports patients, specimens, equipment, and related items safely and comfortably to and from areas within the hospital as assigned in a timely manner.
- Greets patients, families, visitors, and staff in a friendly, courteous, and positive customer service manner. Identifies self as a transporter.
- Verifies patient identification with the patient and by checking the patient ID band. Obtains/verifies first and last name, medical record number, and destination prior to transport.
- Picks up specimens from patient floors and clinic areas and transports them to laboratories in properly sealed containers. Ensures specimens are delivered to the appropriate lab accompanied by the requisition if required.
- Delivers patient equipment to areas. Retrieves/cleans equipment from designated areas, labels it as "Equipment is Clean," and delivers broken equipment to the appropriate location for repair.
- Carries pager/radio/headset while on duty and responds to pages or radios in a timely manner.
- Maintains a log of all patient transports, documenting last and first name, time, destination, and specimens/equipment transported. Submits the log to the supervisor.
- Closes out trips, signs in/out for lunch and breaks through the automated IVR telephone system, and checks in via the IVR automated system.
- Records an inventory count of equipment at the end of the day.
- Checks/inspects transport vehicles for safety prior to transport, including cleanliness, sufficient oxygen for round trips, brakes, handrails, and mattresses. Cleans if necessary.
- Performs all duties with a customer service focus, representing the hospital and Nursing department professionally and courteously.
- Responds to all requests for service through radio, telephone, and personal contact. If unable to assist, follows through by contacting the dispatcher or supervisor.
- Refers unanswerable or unfulfilled requests for service to the supervisor and/or manager.
- Maintains cleanliness and neatness of work and lounge areas.
- Assists in hospital emergency disaster plans, identifying emergency situations and initiating appropriate response actions.
- Completes department charge slips and records all transactions into the computerized information system.
- Requests assistance from nurses or aides in transferring/moving patients from wheelchair to stretcher or bed.
- Transports patients to the Morgue and to and from the Recovery Room.
- Performs dispatcher functions as required.
- Utilizes the hospital's Values as the basis for decision-making and to facilitate the division's hospital mission.
- Follows established hospital infection control and safety procedures, including cleaning stretchers/wheelchairs after transporting patients with "precaution" status.
- Complies with established practice standards, policies, procedures, protocols, guidelines, and regulations (e.g., DPH, Joint Commission, Fire Codes, OSHA).
- Completes annual mandatory educational requirements, such as safety regulation and infection control reviews, departmental and unit-specific competencies.
- Assists in training and orientation of new and existing staff, including participation in monthly Safety Committee meetings.
- Ensures a clean and safe work environment through quality assurance inspection and reporting.
- Maintains equipment inventory and tracking reports, completing quarterly 12-point safety inspections on all wheelchairs and stretchers.
- Monitors key service areas to ensure quality service is provided by the Transport Department through surveys, rounding inspections, and/or reporting procedures.
- Educates and promotes compliance with all safety procedures and regulations, including HIPAA, OSHA, FCC, State/Local Government, JCAHO, and infection controls.
- Demonstrates knowledge of computer systems and applications such as Microsoft Office® and related software. Educates staff on the proper use of IVR systems, pagers, two-way radios, and phones.
- Ensures department quality standards are consistently achieved through collaboration with Nursing, Bed Control, and Support Departments.
- Follows up on issues related to service and operations to ensure requests are completed efficiently, safely, and timely.
- Builds effective teams and fosters open dialogue, motivating staff to function as a team in achieving goals and maximum productivity.
- Assists in the development and implementation of internal rewards and recognition programs to increase employee engagement and satisfaction.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- 6-12 months of experience as a Patient Transporter in the current Patient Transport Department.
- Requires heavy lifting, pushing, pulling, and standing.
- Effective interpersonal skills to communicate clearly and interact appropriately with nursing staff, patients, families/visitors, physicians, and other hospital staff.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively speak, read, and write English.
- Ability to follow instructions, work independently, and efficiently to complete assigned work.
- Aptitude and/or passion for safety; ability to function as a "safety technician."
- Detail-oriented, safety-minded, and responsive to potentially hazardous situations.
- Personal desire to improve the safety record and reduce accidents in the department.
Skills
- Knowledge of computer systems and applications such as Microsoft Office® and related software.
- Ability to troubleshoot and resolve equipment and application issues with the Information Systems Department.
Schedule
Full Time, 12:00 PM - 8:30 PM, rotating weekends.
Pay
Compensation range: $18.58 - $22.20 per hour. This range offers an estimate based on minimum job qualifications. Base pay is determined by education, experience, and licensure/certifications directly related to position requirements.
