About the role

The role involves abstracting and coding pertinent information from medical records in the prescribed format, ensuring compliance with California Cancer Registry (CCR) reporting requirements, Commission on Cancer, and departmental standards. The position requires maintaining >97% accuracy rates and proficiency in various software tools.

Responsibilities

• Accurately abstracts and codes pertinent information from the medical records in the prescribed format satisfying California Cancer Registry (CCR) reporting requirements, as well as Commission on Cancer, and departmental standard using the CNExT cancer registry software.
• Maintains systems programs for tracking cases and quality control.
• Applies treatment information for radiation oncology cases.
• Reviews all treatment summaries and consults for radiation oncology cases, verifies existing treatment and follow-up, and applies new/missing information.
• Correctly interprets treatment information from hard-copy summaries, and from within Radiation Oncology database (MOSAIQ) on-line.
• Identifies cases to be abstracted and coded through various sources (e.g., CAS (pathology & radiology), ADT billing, Dermatopathology, neuropathology).
• Assures that all case finding sources are thoroughly investigated in CNExT and APEX (Epic).
• Accurately assesses the case determining if correspondence should be sent to collect further staging, treatment or diagnostic information from outside providers.
• Provides expertise to perform visual editing of completed cases, up to 50 cases/day.
• Takes lead responsibility for supervising other registrars on QC projects (e.g., re-abstracting audits, TNM staging audits, re-casefinding audits) and assists manager with training CTR-eligible staff.

Qualifications

• 5 years of relevant hospital experience, with 3 years in abstracting complex cases in facilities such as an Academic/Teaching Cancer Center and/or a NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center.
• A thorough knowledge of mandatory California Cancer Registry reportability, coding, and abstracting requirements, and knowledge of current mandatory standards for cancer program accreditation by the American College of Surgeons (Commission on Cancer).
• A complete and accurate knowledge of human anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, oncology terminology, and oncology physiology, and oncology diagnostic and treatment modalities.
• Expertise in current staging schemes (SEER Summary, SEER Extent of Disease, Collaborative Stage and American Joint Committee Cancer Staging (TNM)).
• Good computer skills with a working knowledge of the CNExT cancer reporting software, Cancer Alert System (CAS) casefinding module, MS Word and Excel or other spreadsheet and word processing applications.
• Familiarity with extracting cancer information from EPIC electronic medical record software.
• Ability to abstract full case in 1.5-2 hours maximum for analytic cases, and to meet minimum quota of 80-100 cases per month if employed full time.
• Ability to manipulate the database for report and studies for researchers and administrators, as well as clinicians.
• Good communication and writing skills.
• CTR (Certified Tumor Registrar) current certification by the National Cancer Registrars Association.
• Ability to navigate remote access through Citrix Receiver application, and have a computer that allows installation of Big Fix application for network identification, Pulse Secure/DUO 2-factor authentication application, runs MS Windows 10, and that can demonstrate latest DDPE encryption.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF.
