About the role
The Native American Patient Experience Ambassador at Mayo Clinic is a key liaison between patients and the Mayo system. They assist patients and families by navigating complex aspects of their care and ensuring their unique needs are met. This role involves providing oversight for patient care experiences, making independent decisions, and offering internal education to care teams.
Responsibilities
- Establish rapport with patients and families using therapeutic communication techniques.
- Assess patients and families for spiritual needs.
- Facilitate the assessment of patients and families for monetary, transportation, and funeral home needs.
- Patient and family education—understand medical diagnoses and treatments.
- Aid patients with tests, procedures, and discharge disposition.
- Support patients and families during deaths, adhering to cultural protocols and communicating with nursing and medical staff.
- Palliative care for patients and families—grief counseling, educating staff on cultural practices with bodies after death.
- Proactively reach out to patients and families before appointments or procedures to anticipate needs.
- Facilitate education for internal stakeholders and care team members as needed.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in communications, business, spiritual care, patient/health care related field and three years of experience in communication, customer service, or patient care is required.
- Nursing background preferred.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Effective in a complex environment with multi-dimensional points of view.
- Comfortable with ambiguity, good decision-making and judgment capabilities, attention to detail, and follow-through.
- Ability to inspire trust and confidence and communicate effectively with internal and external audiences.
- Self-motivated, self-directed, and highly organized.
- Demonstrated experience building relationships with and direct interaction with patient populations.
- Belief in the mission and strong ethical conduct is essential.
- Collaborative and professional interactions with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
- Proficient in information technology, MS Office products, and clinical applications.

- Compensation Detail: $29.69 - $44.55 / hour; Consideration of education, experience, and tenure when job offers are extended.
