Patient Care Technician - PRN Rotating - 5E Acuity Adaptable - Bloomington

About the Role

As a bedside caregiver, you will provide a phenomenal patient experience by anticipating the needs of patients such as providing drinks, assisting with meal ordering, encouraging walking, assisting with baths, and providing clean linens and gowns. Our Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) have compassion for our patients, a caring bedside manner, and an ability to work in a fast-paced environment.

You will provide clinical assistance to the bedside RN by obtaining vital signs and reporting abnormalities or changes in a patient's behavior to detect and provide rapid treatment. A PCT ensures patient safety by utilizing safety measures such as gait belts, bed and chair alarms, and staying within arm's reach of patients when moving around.

Responsibilities

• Anticipate and fulfill patient needs, including providing drinks, assisting with meal ordering, encouraging mobility, and assisting with personal hygiene.
• Obtain and monitor vital signs, reporting any abnormalities or behavioral changes to the primary RN or charge nurse.
• Ensure patient safety through the use of gait belts, bed and chair alarms, and maintaining close proximity during patient movement.
• Apply principles of infection control and aseptic techniques to prevent infection of patients, self, and others.
• Perform physically demanding and repetitious movements while maintaining attention to detail and organization.
• Exercise judgment and initiative in resolving problems, setting priorities, and managing a high workload within limited timeframes.
• Maintain constant mental awareness and the ability to withstand high levels of tension, stress, and frequent interruptions.

Requirements

• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the AHA or attainment at the completion of the IU Health PCA education program.
• Other advanced life support certifications may be required per unit/department specialty according to patient care policies.
• Knowledge of care appropriate to the age and developmental level of patients served.
• Up-to-date knowledge of procedures and standards related to patient care activities.
• Proficiency in interpersonal and communication skills.
• Ability to read, perform basic math, and organize tasks efficiently.
• Knowledge of procedures, equipment, software, and standards related to patient care activities for non-licensed roles (e.g., PCA/PCR/PCI).
• Understanding of principles of good personal hygiene and infection control.
