About the Role
The Patient Care Technician (PCT) serves as a supportive member of the patient care team, assisting in routine and non-complex aspects of patient care. The PCT assists RNs, LPNs, and Physicians in the patient care process and may have additional duties assigned within the scope of the role.
Responsibilities
- Assist with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs)
- Perform vital signs and other basic patient care tasks
- Support nursing staff and physicians in patient care activities
- Adhere to body mechanics and safety principles
- Communicate effectively with patients, families, and healthcare team members
Requirements
- High School graduate or equivalent required
- Graduate from a certified Nursing Assistant Program or Health Occupations Program (HOSA) preferred
- Completion of first clinical rotation as a Nurse Student (e.g., "Nursing Fundamentals" course including ADLs and vital signs) or 1 year of experience in a patient care role (acute care, nursing home, or home care setting) preferred
- BLS certification required
- Knowledge of medical terminology preferred
Skills
- Ability to resolve customer complaints and concerns
- Effective oral and written communication
- Understanding of physical care and comfort principles
Work Conditions & Physical Requirements
- Sitting for 20% of the workday; mobility required for 80% of the workday
- Occasional stooping, bending, kneeling, and crouching
- Frequent reaching, use of hands, and repetitive actions
- Occasional lifting or carrying up to 50 pounds; pushing/pulling up to 150 pounds
- Continuous speaking with clear diction and hearing sensitivity in conversations (phone or in-person)
- Continuous visual acuity at close and distant ranges
- Inside work protected from weather but not temperature changes
- Minimal noise levels; frequent computer work
- Occasional exposure to risk of electrical shock, infectious diseases, hazardous chemicals, and radiation
