Patient Care Technician - Medicine Specialty Unit (6RC) - 90% Day Shifts

The University of Iowa Health Care Department of Nursing is seeking Patient Care Technicians in the Medicine Specialty Unit (6RC) to assist members of the Nursing team in providing patient care under the direct supervision of Registered Nurses. This unit is part of the Medical Surgical Services (MSS) Division and focuses on the care of adults with a variety of medical diagnoses, including pulmonary, gastrointestinal, renal, endocrine, circulatory, neurological, infectious diseases, dermatological disorders, and autoimmune disorders. Responsibilities

• Independently obtain and record vital signs including temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure.
• Carry out medical asepsis when performing skills and tasks including phlebotomy, peripheral IV removal, Foley catheter removal, and care for medically isolated patients.
• Perform simple diagnostic and therapeutic procedures such as enemas, preoperative skin preparation, dressing changes, collecting specimens, and applying binders or braces.
• Perform special duties as taught and directed by the nurse in charge, including phlebotomy, ECG lead/12-lead placement, and brace/pin site care.
• Assist with patient admission, transfers, and discharges.
• Provide for patients' personal hygiene and comfort.
• Turn, position, and ambulate patients.
• Transport patients, equipment, specimens, and supplies.
• Feed patients, serve drinking water and nourishments, and record patients' intake.
• Assist patients with bedpans and urinals and record output.
• Participate in nursing care conferences; report pertinent patient information and incidents to the nurse in charge.
• Provide patient comfort measures through social interactions.
• Share responsibility for preparation, proper use, and care of equipment and supplies, and for neatness and cleanliness of the unit.
• Assemble and maintain equipment and supplies in preparation for diagnostic or treatment procedures.
• Clean areas per designated guidelines and standards, demonstrating proper use of approved disinfectants and care of housekeeping equipment.
• Stock and supply patient rooms and nursing units.

Schedule

• Day shifts, including 24 hours of weekend per 4-week schedule and holiday rotation.
• 90% time (36 hours per week).
