Patient Care Technician II / Night - Full Time - ED - SVH

About the Role

This position provides direct care to patients and assists with non-direct patient care unit coordination. The incumbent performs basic nursing procedures related to care and comfort of patients in stable condition, and assists the RN in the care of acutely ill patients. Responsibilities include practicing medical asepsis, respecting patient dignity and privacy, maintaining objectivity, and adhering to hospital policies and procedures. The role involves maintaining the patient/family environment, performing general unit upkeep, and using accurate verbal and written communication to document patient care in the electronic medical record.

Works under the general supervision of the Registered Nurse for patients in stable condition and under direct supervision for acutely ill or complex patients. Receives specific work assignments from the Charge Nurse and/or Care Team Leader.

Responsibilities

• Provides, obtains, or performs and documents direct patient care and activities, including:
  • Activities of daily living
  • Incentive spirometer encouragement and observation
  • Cough and deep breath exercises
  • Skin surveys
  • Vital signs
  • Specimen collection and phlebotomy
  • Intake and output monitoring
  • Meal consumption tracking
  • Height and weight measurement
  • 12-lead EKG testing
  • Blood glucose testing/monitoring
  • Point of care testing
  • Bladder scanning
  • Patient and medical record transportation
  • Oxygen documentation
  • Early mobility/ambulation protocols
  • Clean catheterization (per hospital protocol)
  • Simple and dry dressing changes
  • Foley catheter removal
  • Urine specimen collection from Foley catheter (per hospital protocol)
  • IV access removal and documentation
  • Assistance with exams, treatments, and procedures
• Participates in quality and patient satisfaction initiatives, such as:
  • Bedside shift report
  • Purposeful hourly rounding for safety (falls prevention, hand washing, isolation protocols)
  • Maintaining a clean and orderly environment
  • Precepting newly hired PCTs
• Accurately documents vital signs, weights, intake and output, restraints, specimen collection, EKG completion, and other treatments. Reports changes in patient conditions to nursing staff.
• Participates in unit activities, including supply stocking and equipment/appliance cleaning, checks, and retrieval.
• Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Requirements

• High School diploma or GED.
• One year of experience as a PCA, PCT, NA, LPN, EMT, or Military experience as a Hospital Corpsman (HM), Combat Medic (68W), or Medical Service Technician (4N0X1) in an acute or long-term care facility OR currently enrolled in an Associate's in Nursing (halfway through program) or Bachelor's in Nursing (Junior year) program.
• Basic computer skills.
• Proficient in phlebotomy and straight catheterization.
• CPR certification (American Heart Association).
• Act 34 Criminal Background Clearance Certificate.
• Act 33 Child Abuse Clearance Certificate.
• Act 73 FBI Fingerprinting Criminal Background Clearance Certificate.

Schedule

Full-time, steady night shifts. 36 hours per week, working 3 x 12-hour shifts. Requires flexibility to work weekends and holiday coverage.
