Patient Care Technician Hospital, Progressive Care - Flagstaff, AZ

About the Role

The Patient Care Technician (PCT), including all hospital units, departments, and the Float/Flex Pool PCT, assists in patient care, documentation, and supply management under the supervision of the charge nurse, clinical manager, and/or director. PCTs maintain unit cleanliness, organization, and supply inventory. They may also function in an office assistant role, answering phones, addressing patient and support individual inquiries within their capabilities, and performing data entry and collection. Specific duties vary by unit:

• Discharge Unit: Assists discharged patients, coordinates discharge logistics, and helps patients utilize resources and access health-related services.
• Labor Delivery and Postpartum Breastfeeding Center: Does not provide direct patient care but manages administrative tasks related to the breastfeeding center.
• Float/Flex Pool: May work across any hospital unit, switch departments during a shift, or serve as a Patient Safety Attendant (PSA) if needed, ceasing PCT duties to sit 1:1 with a patient. Call requirements apply for Float/Flex Pool PCTs.

This position is on-site only and involves caring for infants, children, adolescents, adults, and geriatric populations while adhering to Northern Arizona Healthcare policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

Patient Care

• Maintains department cleanliness, including following procedures for cleanup after treatments.
• Assists with patient transfers, including those with weight-bearing restrictions or motor impairments.
• Helps patients transfer to/from wheelchairs as needed.
• Assists with donning/doffing compression garments.
• Observes and reports patient skin integrity issues to supervising clinicians.
• May assist with catheter/IV removal and phlebotomy within scope of practice.
• Prioritizes and problem-solves to address changes in patient status/condition.
• Collaborates with physicians and healthcare professionals to ensure appropriate staffing for quality care.
• Quickly and accurately assesses patient care needs.
• Serves as a resource for staff, assists with patient care, and helps physicians with EMR order entry.
• Assists with dressing removal as directed by supervising clinicians.
• Helps patients with activities of daily living, such as toileting and mobility, under clinician direction.
• Follows safety guidelines for isolation precautions and bloodborne pathogens.

Discharge PCT

• Assists patients in and out of vehicles as needed.
• Supports and reinforces discharge instructions.
• Collaborates with interdisciplinary teams and community agencies.
• Uses the EMR for documentation and communication.
• Assists with securing durable medical equipment (DME) as necessary.

Labor Delivery and Postpartum Breastfeeding Center

• Manages breast pump rental program bookkeeping, including invoicing, payment processing, and tracking billing.
• Contacts patients regarding breast pump rental and billing.
• Orders supplies for the breastfeeding center and nursery.
• Liaises with breast pump suppliers and companies.
• Cleans and restocks breast pumps in the breastfeeding center.
• Performs telephone triage with families regarding breastfeeding.
• Maintains department cleanliness and assists in transporting equipment/supplies.

Administrative

• Answers, evaluates, and prioritizes incoming administrative phone calls, obtaining complete and accurate information.
• Assists in orienting and training new PCT staff.
• Promotes best practices among colleagues.
• Maintains unit documents and charts, including copying as requested.
• Assists the charge nurse with clerical duties.
• Documents objective patient data and care provided, including reporting abnormal findings to supervising clinicians.

Education

• Demonstrates understanding of unit Standards of Care and Practice, and locates Policy and Procedures manuals.
• Engages in professional development and collegial interactions with peers and students.
• Applies nursing process guidelines and Arizona State Board of Nursing laws/regulations at a fully competent level.

Compliance/Safety

• Reports safety-related incidents in a timely manner using the Midas/RDE tool.
• Attends all safety-related training programs and performs work safely.
• Monitors the work environment for safety issues and ensures others follow safe practices.
• Stays current with state/federal regulations and company policies relevant to the role.
• Maintains up-to-date certifications/licenses, including completing mandatory training within specified time frames.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED (Required).
• Current, unrestricted CNA or LNA license in the State of Arizona (Required).
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (Required).
• Fingerprint Clearance Card application number (Required upon hire if no Arizona LNA license).
• Fingerprint Clearance Card (Required within 90 days of hire).
• Maintains appropriate clinical competencies as assigned by departmental leadership.

Experience

• For Discharge PCT: Demonstrated ability to collaborate with interdisciplinary teams and community agencies, utilize EMR for documentation/communication, and knowledge of community resources and post-discharge planning.
• Proficiency with computers and basic software programs, as technology is integrated into patient care.
