This is a Day shift position (10:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m.) with required availability every other weekend and every other holiday.

About the Role

Provides general support tasks (clinical and non-clinical) for an assigned patient care area. Works with other members of the patient care team to deliver care to patients across all age groups, including newborns, infants, children, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics. Performs venipuncture when available.

Qualifications

  • Specific previous phlebotomy experience and/or phlebotomy courses in a phlebotomy program are preferred.
  • Certification highly preferred.
  • Good communication skills, including proper use of grammar and lab technical terms.
  • Previous patient care experience preferred, but not required.
  • Previous phlebotomy experience preferred, but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Performs routine and specialized phlebotomy procedures:
    • Venipuncture
    • Skin puncture
    • Assisting with line draws
  • Participates in the delivery of patient care for patients of all age groups under the direction of an RN, including but not limited to:
    • Lifting, turning, and positioning patients
    • Observing confused and difficult patients
    • Toileting and peri care
    • Mobilizing patients (transfers and ambulation)
    • Discontinuing IVs and indwelling Foley catheters
    • Crutch training
    • Applying restraints
    • Stocking department
    • Post-mortem care
    • Assisting patients out of private vehicles/ambulances
    • Functioning as a sitter for patients requiring 1:1 observation
    • Assisting radiology staff with patient transfers during radiology studies
  • Performs and records specimen collection:
    • Obtains urine, stool, and sputum specimens for patients of all age groups; instructs patients in proper specimen collection technique.
    • Point-of-care testing, including glucometry
    • Actively participates in and documents quality controls on all procedures as required in testing protocol
    • Actively participates in the Quality Assurance Program as required by the Laboratory and regulatory agencies
    • Completes EKGs
  • Participates in patient safety and patient satisfaction:
    • Correctly identifies patients, labels specimens accurately, and follows policy for obtaining specimens.
    • Answers call bells promptly.
    • Reports need for equipment repair.
    • Maintains a neat and tidy environment (empties laundry, delivers equipment, keeps rooms clean and safe).
  • Performs errands in a timely manner, including but not limited to:
    • Making photocopies
    • Transporting blood products to and from the patient care area
    • Maintaining inventory of patient care area-specific supplies
  • Maintains CPR certification yearly.
  • Complies with hospital/nursing department policies and procedures, maintains patient confidentiality, and adheres to all corporate compliance regulations.
  • Represents the hospital professionally to patients, families, and the healthcare team, demonstrating sensitivity in verbal and non-verbal communications.
  • Answers telephone promptly and politely, using proper phone etiquette by identifying self, title, and department.
  • Supports the philosophy of the hospital and nursing department.
  • Demonstrates willingness to accept non-routine work assignments as appropriate within scope of practice.
  • Assists with orientation of new Patient Care Technicians.
  • Demonstrates cost-effective patient care through proper use and care of equipment, prudent use of supplies, accurate charging, and appropriate utilization of resources.
  • Demonstrates initiative in completing work as defined in areas of responsibility.
  • Checks e-cylinders/regulators.
  • Recognizes emergency situations and initiates a plan of action.
  • Participates in performance improvement activities to improve service and care.
  • Accesses secured storage areas as authorized to perform essential job functions and duties.

Pay

$17.68 – $26.25 per hour
