Role Overview
The Dialysis Technician supports the healthcare team by operating hemodialysis machines, assisting with patient education, monitoring treatment, and ensuring safety and hygiene standards. They evaluate vascular access, initiate and discontinue treatments, record accurate treatment data, and respond to patient needs during therapy. They assist in training staff, maintain infection control protocols, and prepare specimens for laboratory testing. Additionally, they support transitional care by guiding newly admitted patients and coordinating treatment options, including home dialysis. The role involves physical tasks such as lifting and moving patients and working in a healthcare environment.
Qualifications & Skills
- High school diploma or GED required, with relevant state or national certification per CMS standards
- Prior patient care experience is preferred
- Must complete dialysis training and CPR certification
- Strong communication, attention to detail, and adherence to infection control practices are essential
- Physical stamina, ability to lift up to 40 lbs., and flexibility to work in a clinical setting
- Commitment to quality care and organizational values is necessary
Key Responsibilities
- Operate and monitor dialysis machines, ensuring safety alarms are active
- Assist in patient education and vascular access evaluation
- Record treatment data accurately and prepare laboratory specimens
- Maintain a clean and safe environment, following infection control policies
- Support transitional care by guiding new patients and coordinating care plans
- Train staff and monitor patient self-care under RN supervision
- Participate in quality improvement activities and documentation processes
