Patient Care Technician
About the Role
The Patient Care Technician will play a crucial role in providing direct care to patients, ensuring their comfort, safety, and well-being. This position involves working collaboratively with nurses, physicians, and other healthcare professionals in a hospital setting.
Responsibilities
- Provide hands-on assistance with bathing, dressing, grooming, and feeding patients.
- Regularly measure and record vital signs, including blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate, and temperature. Report any deviations from normal ranges promptly to the nursing staff.
- Accurately document patient care activities, vital signs, and observations in the electronic health record (EHR) or other designated systems.
- Collect and label specimens accurately, ensuring proper documentation and timely delivery to the laboratory. Adhere to infection control protocols during specimen handling.
- Assist in various medical procedures, such as wound care, lab draws, EKGs, ADLs, IV’s, CCHD, PKU, infant baths, hearing screenings, and patient transfers.
- Communicate effectively with patients and their families, providing information, answering questions, and offering emotional support.
- Respond promptly and assist with emergent situations while following hospital policies and procedures.
- Collaborate effectively with nurses, physicians, therapists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure coordinated and comprehensive patient care.
- Ensure confidentiality of patient information and compliance with HIPAA regulations.
- Register and verify patient information and insurance.
- Perform any tasks, projects, or actions reasonably within the scope of the position as requested by supervisors or management.
- Maintain professionalism, including respect and deference to licensed medical providers.
- Keep all BMH business and patient information strictly confidential.
- Refrain from conduct that may cause concern or annoyance to patients or staff.
- Work congenially and cooperatively with all BMH employees, maintaining a positive attitude.
- Communicate complaints or issues only through appropriate BMH channels (management chain of command).
- Check BMH email at least once daily if applicable.
- Refrain from releasing any "Private BMH Information" to unauthorized parties without formal approval from BMH’s CEO.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Current certification as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), EMT, AEMT, or MA.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Preferred minimum of 6 months of healthcare experience.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Basic computer skills, including knowledge of Microsoft and Google Software suites.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Proven ability to work as part of a team and manage time effectively.
- Ability to carry items weighing up to 75 lbs., lift items/patients up to 100 lbs with assistance.
- Exposure to cleaning chemicals, contagious organisms, bloodborne pathogens, and bio-hazardous waste.
- Fluently read, write, and speak English.
- General math skills and reasoning ability to problem-solve creatively.
- Ability to interact professionally with coworkers, management, medical staff, and the public in a multicultural environment.
- Willingness to complete a typing test with a minimum of 30 WPM.
