Patient Care Tech PRN

This PRN (as-needed) position covers vacations, extended leaves, call-outs, and periods of high patient flow on the MedSurg Neuro unit. Shifts are 12 hours (7:00 AM – 7:00 PM or 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM) and may occur any day of the week, including weekends.

About the role

As a Patient Care Technician (PCT), you will be a vital part of our collaborative nursing team, supporting Registered Nurses in providing hands-on care and helping create a safe, welcoming environment for patients. You’ll assist with daily needs such as vital signs, mobility, and personal care, while helping RNs monitor conditions and carry out care plans. Your attention, empathy, and teamwork help restore comfort and dignity for every patient you serve.

Responsibilities

• Obtain vital signs, height and weight, intake and output, calorie counts, application of ice/heat, and/or simple non-sterile dressing changes.
• Answer patient call lights in a timely manner and respond to patient needs/requests.
• Assist patients with activities of daily living: bathing, shaving, oral care, toileting, grooming, changing linens, providing water, ambulating, assisting with meal delivery and feeding as directed.
• Perform safe patient handling: turning and positioning, use of specialty beds, patient transfer and use of transfer devices, ambulation assistance and use of assistive devices, restraint alternatives, oxygen use and transport, suction use, pre-operative skin preparation and/or use of sequential compression devices (SCD).
• Record information in the patient’s medical record.
• Communicate with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare team members regarding changes in a patient’s care and condition.
• Educate patients and families on the care and therapies being provided, in conjunction with physicians and nurses.
• Monitor supply levels in your unit and patient rooms and restock as needed.
• Provide non-medicated care such as dressing changes, skin protection, and use of supportive devices.
• Keep patient areas and common spaces clean, organized, and stocked to maintain safety and efficiency.
• Manage supplies, equipment, and logs to support infection control and team readiness.

Requirements

• Licensed as a CNA in South Carolina preferred; RN nursing school students may be considered.
• Current American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS) Health Care Provider certification required or must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date.
• 1 year of acute/hospital experience preferred.
• Nonviolent Crisis Intervention certification must be obtained within 90 days of employment start date.
