Patient Care Nurse Assistant - ICU

This PRN Patient Care Nurse Assistant (PCNA) position in the 10-bed ICU offers a flexible schedule, making it an excellent opportunity for nursing students to balance school, work, and life. You will work varying shifts alongside highly trained caregivers in a patient-centric, evidence-based care model.

Responsibilities

• Provide or assist with patient care under the supervision of an RN, including vital signs, weight, personal care, activities of daily living, patient transfers/transport, pulse oximetry, point-of-care testing, dressing changes, applying external monitoring devices, and removing urinary Foley catheters.
• Report abnormal findings or changes in patients’ physical, mental, and emotional conditions to an RN.
• Assist with keeping patients’ rooms clean and orderly.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (required upon hire if not already certified).
• For nursing students: BLS certification required upon hire.
• Military experience as a Hospital Corpsman (HM), Combat Medic (68W), or Medical Service Technician (4N0X1) will be considered.

Preferred Qualifications

• State Tested Nursing Assistant (STNA).

Physical Requirements

• Ability to perform physical work not exceeding 50 pounds; assistance required for workloads exceeding this limit.
• Reposition or pull up patients in bed, lift supplies, place equipment, and push beds throughout the hospital.
• Bend over to perform duties such as checking chest tube drainage or urine output.
• Quickly maneuver through halls, stairways, and patient rooms in response to emergencies.
• Visual and auditory skills required to interpret environmental input.
• Heavy lifting may be required in the event of building evacuation to carry patients to safety.

Mental and Special Demands

• Ability to work at a fast pace, prioritize multiple assignments, and respond to numerous requests.
• Resolve conflicts and collaborate with department directors, physicians, and healthcare team members.
• Ensure operational efficiency, problem-solve, and make decisions under pressure.
• Exercise self-control and tolerate stress when dealing with conflicting demands.
• Essential sensory requirements: ability to visually assess patients and implement care plans.
• Essential technical/motor skills: finger dexterity and eye/hand coordination for charting, using equipment, and providing direct patient care.

Personal Protective Equipment

Follows Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment as required for procedures.

Pay

Hourly pay range for new hires: $20.75. Actual compensation will be determined based on the candidate’s work history, experience, skill set, and education. This range does not include shift differentials, overtime, or the value of Cleveland Clinic’s benefits package (e.g., healthcare, dental, vision, retirement contributions).
