Patient Care Attendant

About the role

VCA Fleming Island Animal Hospital is hiring a full-time Patient Care Attendant to join our Fear Free Certified team. We are a 2-doctor, full-service veterinary hospital located in Fleming Island, FL. We offer primary care, illness care, surgery, dentistry, and boarding services for our patients. We also provide care for pocket pets like ferrets, guinea pigs, rats, mice, hedgehogs, and reptiles. We partner with rescue organizations such as the Jacksonville Humane Society, Safe Animal Shelter, and others. Our team fosters a respectful, supportive, adaptable, and collaborative environment.

Responsibilities

• Provide compassionate daily care for hospitalized, boarding, and daycare patients
• Feed, walk, bathe, and monitor pets in our care
• Maintain clean, comfortable, and sanitary kennels, runs, cages, treatment areas, and hospital spaces
• Assist veterinary assistants, technicians, and doctors with patient handling and restraint as needed
• Monitor patients for changes in behavior, appetite, elimination, or comfort level and communicate concerns to the medical team
• Prepare patient areas for arrivals, procedures, boarding stays, and discharges
• Aid with laundry, dishes, stocking, and general hospital cleanliness
• Help create a positive experience for pets, clients, and team members

Qualifications

The ideal candidate is dependable, compassionate, detail-oriented, and eager to learn. Previous animal care experience is preferred, but we are willing to train the right person who has a strong work ethic and genuine passion for patient care. Preferred qualifications include:

• Experience working in a veterinary hospital, boarding facility, shelter, kennel, grooming facility, or animal care environment
• Comfort handling dogs, cats, and exotic/pocket pets
• Strong communication and teamwork skills
• Ability to remain calm and professional in a fast-paced environment
• Willingness to learn Fear Free and low-stress handling techniques
• Ability to lift, bend, stand, walk, and perform physically active tasks throughout the shift
• Reliable attendance and availability for a full-time schedule, including rotating weekends
