Patient Care Associate 2/ Full-time/ Mid Shift/ ER/ Jackson West Medical Center

About the Role

A licensed member of the health care team who performs advanced, supportive administrative and certain clinical duties to support the delivery of age-specific and a single standard of care. This is a Level 4 position in the nursing support ladder, working under the supervision of a registered nurse to meet patients' hygiene, safety, nutrition, elimination, and comfort needs. The role may require demonstrating knowledge and skills in a specialty area, including emergency room (ER) or other clinical settings.

Responsibilities

• Uses a systematic process to provide or modify care and patient/family education.
• Assists the health care team with advanced procedures, including preparing supplies and equipment, providing patient/family support, positioning patients, and setting up or removing equipment.
• Performs a variety of tasks associated with generalized patient care, such as taking vital signs, assisting with feeding, mobility, IV lines, drainage, and personal hygiene (bathing, dressing, bed making, linen changes).
• Utilizes specialized equipment (e.g., spirometer, restraints) as needed for patient care.
• Prepares and cleans exam rooms, patient treatment areas, and stretchers between patient use.
• Transports patients to and from treatment areas as needed.
• Cleans assigned clinic areas at the end of the day according to departmental procedures.
• Assists with patient food orders for kitchen evaluation and the discharge process according to JHS policies.
• Conducts daily rounds of assigned work areas, initiates work orders for repairs, and communicates actions to the health care team.
• Maintains supplies and equipment for the patient floor, including inventory, ordering, stocking, rotating, and charging for supplies and equipment.
• Assists with office duties, such as answering phones and taking messages.
• Follows and performs all unit-specific policies and procedures, as detailed on the unit-specific competency checklist.
• Utilizes job- and unit-specific equipment as required.
• If assigned to the ER, responds to medical and non-emergency calls, assists paramedics with emergency medical treatment and triage, and transports patients to medical facilities.
• If assigned to a specialty area, prepares patients for procedures, sterilizes equipment, and assists under the medical team's direction.

• Performs all other related job duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High School diploma is required.
• Generally requires 1 to 3 years of related experience.
• Ability to analyze, organize, and prioritize work accurately while meeting multiple deadlines.
• Effective communication skills in both oral and written form.
• Ability to handle difficult and stressful situations with critical thinking and professional composure.
• Ability to understand and follow instructions.
• Knowledge and skill in using job-appropriate technology and software applications.
• Must meet and maintain all unit-specific and organizational skills, competencies, certifications, and licensures required by the clinical area.

Qualifications

Effective 4/25/2024, ONE of the following is required:

• Proof of completion of a school training program for patient care technician AND proof of phlebotomy training.
• Florida Licensure as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) AND proof of phlebotomy training.
• Proof of completion of a school training program for Medical Assisting (Phlebotomy is included in training).
• Florida Licensure as an EMT (Phlebotomy is included in training).

American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification with at least 6 months validity is required upon hire and must be maintained for the duration of employment. Additional applicable life support certifications for Healthcare Providers may be required at the unit level.

Physical Requirements

• Job function requires extended standing or walking.
• Must be able to carry objects weighing 21 to 50 pounds.
• Able to lift or move objects weighing 51 to 100 pounds with the use of appropriate devices.
• Frequent visual acuity required for activities such as extended computer use.

• Functions in a fast-paced environment with occasional high pressure, emergent, or stressful situations.

• Must wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when exposed to infectious or clinical hospital environments.
