Patient Care Assistant - PRN Med/Surg Oncology

About the role

As a Patient Care Assistant (PCA) at North Alabama Medical Center, you will be part of a diverse healthcare network dedicated to improving community health. You will be responsible for performing basic patient care tasks, assisting patients with daily activities, and maintaining a clean and safe environment.

Responsibilities

  • Performs basic patient care as delegated by an RN, including monitoring vital signs, blood glucose measurements, and accurate intake/output recording.
  • Assists patients with activities of daily living such as bathing, grooming, eating, toileting, and ambulation.
  • Observes and promptly reports any abnormal physical, mental, or emotional findings to nursing staff.
  • Maintains clean, safe, and well-stocked patient rooms and common areas.
  • Manages the tech desk and supports nursing/physician staff and overall department throughput.
  • Documents care and activities according to unit standards.
  • Performs other duties as assigned and participates in performance improvement initiatives.

Requirements

  • Requires critical thinking, decisive judgment, ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Rapid learning and proficiency in multiple software systems.
  • Effective English communication (reading, writing, speaking).
  • Ability to complete the Skills Competency Checklist within 90 days of hire.

Qualifications

  • A high school diploma is preferred.
  • An RN (Registered Nurse) or EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) certification is preferred.
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) certification is required.
  • Handle with Care preferred.

Skills

  • Strong organizational and multitasking skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to handle stress and prioritize tasks effectively.

Pay

The pay for this position is commensurate with experience.

Schedule

The schedule for this position is Per Diem (PRN) on the Med/Surg Oncology Unit.
